They seem to be the same internally, just that the 1357 is taller

i found out more today about the oil filters...when u first got ur turbo subaru...it came with the oil filter 15208AA060 and then was replaced by a 15208AA080 which is smaller and made in Japan....this smaller filter helps...the larger filter collects more heat from the exhaust and in extreme conditions can cause a blocked filter.....the part number 15208AA080 changes to 15208AA100....this new filter (AA100) is exactly the same as the AA080 except fot the emblem on the side and the outline around the word engine on top....and it's also produced in the US now....that's the reason for the change...so on all turbo models the AA080 and the AA100 should be used...and on the non-turbo models stick with the AA060 until they don't make them anymore...

To add to this....

Purolator changed their Pure One filter to a smaller version as well. I found this out 3-4 weeks ago with my last oil change. A side by side comparo reveiled that the new filter is MUCH smaller than their old filter. The part number changed too.

Yes, I noticed this quite a while ago, but the change was made only for the 2004 & 2005 WRX. The 2003 & 2002 WRX are still listed as the bigger PL14460. This is according to www.pureoil.com.

subaru recommends that all turbo models use the smaller filter...due to heat...it's a very rare case but a few filters have been clogged do to extreme temperature of the oil....

The diameter change was what confused me - it's a new car to me and i always do my own oil and haven't seen this before -

It was a rather comedy of errors change -

confusing filter application so I ran to NASIOC - (east coast all store closed etc - wife pissed that I'm still at work and she may have to come get me)

thought I was on the 4th quart not the fifth so put 5 quarts in (vs 4.8)

missed drain plug gasket......(in a hurry to get done)

so removed plug and stuck finger in real quick to save 30 bucks worth of Mobil one....

Got gasket on w/ one hand while finger in oil pan.....

Got plug back in without spilling much.....ABOUT .2 quart!!!

SO I"M ALL SQUARE!!! guess you had to be there!!

I better go back to engineering where I can't hurt anyone!
