i spent the last hour or so looking through the cai for n/a scoobies thread. i was considering getting a weapon r dragon intake, until everything i read about them said that the dragon filter sucks. what i do like about the dragon intake is that it is fairly cheap (135 with shipping) and they make them to fit specific models so i wouldnt have to worry about it fitting in my 99 impreza L. are the filter sizes universal so that if i do not like the dragon filter, i can just get another filter to replace rather then replacing the entire intake? and if that is the case, does the increased performance come from just the filter (meaning, would the $135 weapon r intake with a better filter be better then a $50 intake with a good filter or would it basically be the same thing?) thank you pete

hey i have a 99 L myself and i spent a lot of time looking this up. your best bet is: ganzflow. plain and simple. i am a cheap bastard so i ended up making my own. its quite easy but i really cant feel the power. so i say spend the $150 for a ganzflow.

The best intake for a N/A Subaru is made by COBB.

HAHAHA, the dragon filter does suck. I had the weapon r with dragon filter when I had a 99 impreza L. It looks so ricey I was embarrassed to pop my hood (except for little kids, LOL). It still sounded cool and I could feel a difference, but don't get one, get something better.

If you follow the pipe from the throttle body you will see the MAF section....it is the first black portion from the TB.

Cobb makes two CAI. One for MAF which should work on '99 RS's and all other subies with the same intake set-up, ie Impreza L's, and Foresters. What I want to know is why I can't use the intake on my 1998 RS. I don't see what the difference is. Both use MAF, but I am sure it will work.

I've read many and cliped many articles on the various intakes, with their pros and cons. Forums and review type webpages as well as other sources have been used for information gathering. Cost was in there at the end. By the documentation available, by both owners and the manufactures and by customer satisfaction I believe COBB is the best intake for a N/A Subaru. A close second would be the Larry Ganz GanzFlow Cold Air Intake with a K&N or other type drop in filter. Why?... Because both systems keep "user-friendly" maintenance in mind, reduced turbulence, better airflow, and exacting fit. No other companies offer a solid CAI and the other features mentioned. BTW, according to some the stock air box and intake system aren't as bad as others may lead you to believe. |

Popular opinion leans towards Cobb for sure, but if money's tight you can pick up a PDM CAI from www.pdm-racing.com . (Click on "Subaru Corner" on the site to see it.)
They're $50 brand new and are an easy alternative to making your own. They're very similar to the first-generation GanzFlow (by Larry Ganz) CAIs, though the new Ganz CAIs are of a different shape. I have a PDM. I like that it retains the OE airbox, but then again I'm one of the skeptical sorts, so the "water suck" thing, even if unrealistic, does keep me on my toes a bit. ![]() =S2= |

The stock intake is just as likly to ingest water as the ganz style, if not more. Unless you do this you will be ok: ![]() |

True, but I was talking about the location of the beginning of the intake. Brands like Injen place the filter to low, so that in areas like where I live and it rains all the time; the filter is too near the ground. It’s kind of pointless on an AWD car to be scared of puddles.
