Never heard anything bad about them. Should be a good car if it's been taken care of.

1998 2.5L DOHC Subarus had some head gasket issues. The chances of head gasket failure are higher for the Phase I motors used, but it's not neccessarily imminent. If the car is in good shape otherwise, I wouldn't pass it up.. but $9k seems a little high to me.

KBB rates the LGT Ltd. @ $7,875 for excellent condition (private party).

if its a 2.5, the only concern is the headgaskets...do a search for complaints on this. other than that, its not a bad car at all.

As fibuz said, headgaskets about the only major problem. That price is a bit high though.

I purchased a 1998 Legacy GT 5MT Wagon last summer with about 83,000 miles. It's my first Subaru and I'm very happy with it. It's smooth, tight and has been very reliable so far through a Canadian winter.

I have read about the headgasket failures and that would be a major expense if it occurs. I think one of the symptoms is a fluctuating coolant temperature gauge, so watch out for that during the test drive...

Regards,
Jim

Great car except for the headgasket. Make sure it passes a compression test. It might have started to fail and the owner is unloading it before it gets worse.

I would agree $9000 is a little high, unless they've replaced the motor already because of head gasket problems they had to fix.

Otherwise it sounds like a solid machine if the $$ is lowered a bit.

I have a 1998 Legacy Gt that I purchased new. It now has about 142k. I've had some work done on front steering/suspension for a total of about $400. This may be the fault of the roads where I live and the speed I drive them. I also had the front cam seal leak fixed at 105k when the timing belts were done. Finally I just replaced the windshield wiper motor with one I pulled from the u-pull it. The gear casing had shattered during one particularly cold morning. So far the headgasket problem has not reared its ugly head.
Overall I have been happy with the car. This is my second car.

My first was a 1989 XT6 that I purchased new and sold with 120k on it to buy the Legacy because it was rustng out and I needed the four door family car.

Thanks for the info.
We went to check it out this morning, it was nice, fully loaded sun roof leather. It had one spot on the back left corner that looked like a scrape or something that was painted over. The other thing was when you gunned it made a almost turbo sounding woosh-squeal. Any ideas?

When I first bought my car, the dealer has reassembled the intake incorrectly causing a similar sound. I'd check out all of the intake piping and filter. Also, turn off all accessories(radio, ac, etc) and see if it still does it.

Actually, just goto your local dealer(if the car isn't being sold from there) and get a full inpsection done along with compression test etc. This should tell you a lot about the car. A few extra things, check that there are 4 of the same tires on it with equal tread. Mis-matched tires/treads is bad (with all AWD cars). Other than that, everything should be straightforward.

Good luck.

I have the exact same car. Blahh the Limited only came in AT, but is otherwise a common GT aside from the leather and color-matched skirts. I’m in the process of swapping my entire drivetrain over to a WRX powerplant. And as a result, may have the only 5MT “Limited” around..

yeah i know, didnt see more than a ding or two, and the scrape on the back. Someone told me it might just be the A/C belt. Any other ideas on the noise.

Huh ?
My 1999 Legacy 2.5 GT Limited has a five speed manual transmission. While the there were very few 5-speed limiteds available, they did exist.

I believe that all '98 & '99 GT Limiteds came with the moon roof standard, where the regular GT's featured the moon-roof as an extra-cost option (95% of the GTs came from the factory with the moon-roof, but it was still treated as an extra cost "option"). There are SOME regular GT's out there that do not have the moon-roof. (I find that the moon-roof restricts head room and isnt really very comfortable for me).

Also Unlike the plain-jane regular GT's both the 1998 and the 1999 Limiteds featured special Polished GT Limited wheels with gold painted sections that look very stunning on the shiney dark black models (although these wheels just dont look right on a silver Legacy).

While it probably doesnt matter a whole lot to you, assuming these are just regular GT wheels, act like it does and ask the dealer to lower his price because it doesnt have the special GT LIMITED wheels.

I always get confused with the gold vs. silver GT wheels too. My 98 GT Limited came off the show room floor with the silver wheels. So yes both silver and gold were available stock.

In 1999 it was the 30th anniversary edition of the Limited GT, which coincidentally came with the 5MT standard and the 4EAT optional.

In 1998 the GT Limited was only available with the 4EAT.

Believe me this isn’t just coming out of my a$$, I too had to look it up…

That looks a lot like my car except mine is a year older.. I only paid $6500 for mine though and it had 62k miles on it.. Talk them down on the price.. I bet if someone traded it in they only gave them ~$4500 for it.
