Default i hate what happens to hi-hat sounds when you convert songs to .mp3

just ripped a cassette to the computer then converted to mp3 to save space and burned to a cd from the mp3.. popped the cd in to give it a listen and realized i'd made a mistake.. the high-hats sounded "sparkley" ..reburned the cd from the original .wav files and it sounds ten times better.. i encoded the mp3s at a pretty high rate too....

yep...digital audio is always a compromise, especially in MP3 format. The hi-hats almost always sound wierd

Use the program Lame to encode and try out the different presets. I use variable bit rate 192 and get pretty good mp3's.

rip your mp3s at a higher bitrate-- at 256k you shouldn't notice the harshness near as much. beyond that is excessive but you will see 384k and even 448k on newsgroups... nutters

what program are you using to convert to mp3? some crappier ones cut out anything above 16khz which would suck for highhats...

i also recommend lame using vbr and all the quality settings turned up...

also the mp3 decoder may suck as well..i recommend the mad mp3 plugin for winamp
http://www.mars.org/home/rob/proj/mpeg/mad-plugin/

it has a higher internal precision than the stock winamp decoder

like alot of people are saying, stop encoding in crappy bitrates. 220kbps VBR or 256kbps CBR or higher only please.
