Impreza GC8 Driving with CEL

Hi, in my '99 2.5RS I always have a CEL for the P0420(because of my brullen headers and catback).
I notice that if I work on my car, and disconnect the battery so it clears the light, when the car is running without the CEL for a short time before it comes back on, it feels like the car runs differently.

Is it just me, or does the car run differently with the CEL? or does something in the computer reset when you disconnect the battery that changes performance?

I may be crazy, but thats how it seems to me.
Thanks

When you do a reset all the learned fuel and timing values in the ECU are cleared so it has to start the learning process all over again. That is probably why the car runs differently. Having a code set shouldn't affect the way it runs unless it's for one of the critical components that the ECU uses for normal operation, such as the front 02, TPS etc.
You should do a "fix" for the P0420, there is no reason to be driving around with the light on all the time. It's easily taken care of. Search the forums for "CEL fix". You'd be best off doing the "mechanical fix", it's easier, no wiring and will allow you to pass OBDII inspection.
