Default Help: Diagnosis for loud noise from old subaru flat-4

I'm posting on behalf of a friend who owns an early 80's Subaru wagon - 2.0l, flat-4 engine... the engine is painfully loud to listen to with the bonnet (hood) open. Noise volume and frequency of occurrence varies in direct relation to engine speed. Noise is a loud clattering, slapping/tapping mechanical sound. Noise appears to be coming from the head on the near-side.. could it be a problem with hydraulic lifters? (do these cars have them?) - or perhaps piston slap... but I would've expected this to be a duller sound, more central... My other thought was a bearing for the timing belt/chain (can't remember, did look)?

Prior to me dismantling to explore can anyone indicate a likely cause (e.g. known problem with these engines)? Or is the engine done for...

Many thanks

It is most likely the Hydraulic Lash Adjusters. They wear out and stop holding oil and make for a lot of clattering in the heads. It is a pretty easy fix but can be quite expensive...

I couldn't think of the link and forgot to come back to this with it. You'll be amazed at the level of support from the USMB.

Someday, the little kiddies will sell their subies for the next "in" car and NASIOC will evolve into the newer generation of USMB. That is my dream at least...... (he he he)
