Default Boost question

I have an 04 WRX with complete utec stage 2 mods as well as a catless up-pipe and IC hoses but with a stage 1 map. Between now and when I can get the car dyno tuned again, I'm considering using the manual boost controller to raise the boost. It's currently set with a 16psi max. What would be a good safe boost level to raise it to? (16.5, 17psi maybe?)

Please don't listen to this guy..... that's a great recipe to fubar your engine nicely.

For reliability, I wouldn't go any higher than 16psi with the stock turbo. Even after your tune... If you search around the forums you'll quickly find out the TD04's efficiency is maxxed out at 16.5-17 psi.

Stick with the lower end of the spec, unless you have lots of extra money laying around for a new engine.

I agree with the first person. The stock turbos efficiency isn't maked out at 16.5-17psi, it all depends on what rpm range you're in. You can run a lot more then 20psi with the stock turbo and still have good efficiency with a stock wrx turbo, just only within certain rpm ranges. Everyone who runs a stock wrx turbo who runs lowish boost thinks that they're keeping the turbo in a more efficient range, when most of the time it really isn't true. Everyone who runs the stock turbo at higher rpms runs the turbo less efficiently then it would be at lower rpms and higher boost since the wrx engine will pull in more air then the stock turbo can make at normal boost levels and higher rpms ranges(like 16psi) making the boost fall naturally. Imo 18psi is good on 93 octane fuel. Ya might wanna think about getting a better fuel pump and upping the fuel pressure a bit though so the injectors don't get maxed out uptop. As always, this is just my opinion and I'm no expert.

peace

Well, thanks for the replies. From the sound of things, I think I'll just leave it alone until I can take it to get re-tuned.
