Default How do you change the Rear Speakers in a Legacy GT?

Yup, you're reading the post so you know what I'm asking here.
I'm trying to change the speakers on the back deck of my friends 98' Legacy GT and I don't wanna break the panelling back there.

Do I just push through those white tabs going through into the trunk and pull hard into the car?

Also, what size are they? They look like 6.5"
Thanx!
Bry

OK so you have to take the seats out and then lift from the center of the panell slowly and pull tords you. I hope this helps.

Good luck, and take your time.

Rory B, I think they mean open the seats up, undo the clips and then slide it forward, we'll try it this week and see if those Polks fit right.

No, you actually have to pull out the seat to get the shelf out. As SubaTubaru said, it's very easy, it really only takes a few minutes. 2 12mm bolts hold in the lower seat cushion, pull that out, and then 3 12mm bolts hold in the seat back (all down low, 1 by each door, and one right in the middle). Unhook the fold-down seats, and then pull up and out on the entire seat back assembly. Done.

As for pulling the shelf out after that, I haven't tried so I don't know how hard that is. But I've taken the rear seats out a couple of times (to get to the rear top mounts, for instance).

Thanks Patrick. I doesn't sound too hard. I just don't know if I'm ready to go ripping seats out when I've had the car less than a week. I'm still trying to get used to the clutch! (it's a little different from an '88 VW) By the way, do you happen to know if the rear deck speakers are 5 and a qtr or 6 and a half by any chance? I can't really be sure from the bottom view.

According to Crutchfield, they're 6 1/2" speakers in the rear. Their prices might not be the best around, but their fitment info is always helpful!

Pat

Edit: I'm so ashamed of myself - I put they're instead of their!

Thanks again, Patrick. I guess I'll have to get a sharp stick to keep Bryan from ripping my seats out till I can scrounge up some dough for speakers.

it is very easy to take the seats out and put new speakers in like it was said there are 2 bolts on the bottom and three on top the three on top i think also hold the seatbelts in and the top slides right out
