Default About to purchase AccessPORT(2004) question

Hi everyone,

I'm about to purchase an AccessPORT to go Stage 1 on my 2004 WRX. If I've done my homework correctly, I should upgrade the AccessPORT first using the Map Management software before even flashing my ECU, because they were never married in the first place. Then, I can marry them and flash the ECU. Is this right? Thanks in advance for your help!

God bless,
Loren

Why would you need to upgrade a brand new AP? I thought the latest maps were pre-loaded.

NEW 2004-2005 WRX AccessPORT Update
Before using the new Map Manager, you will need to first have your AccessPORT upgraded to the latest software which includes the ability to properly report the VIN number on 2005 vehicles. The 2004 models did not support this option, however additional updates have been made to the map files which require all 2004-2005 owners to perform this upgrade.

DUE TO THE FACT THAT AT LEAST ONE PERSON A DAY DAMAGES THEIR ECU BECAUSE THEY FAIL TO PROPERLY FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS, WE RECOMMEND YOU UNMARRY YOUR ACCESSPORT AND SEND IT IN TO US FOR THE UPGRADE TO BE PERFORMED.

IF YOU DECIDE YOU WISH TO PERFORM THE UPDATE YOURSELF, YOU WILL BE DOING SO AT YOUR OWN RISK. ANY DAMAGE TO YOUR ECU WILL NOT BE COVERED UNDER ANY WARRANTY. THE AccessPORT MUST BE IN AN UNMARRIED STATE BEFORE USING THIS PROGRAM. FAILURE TO DO SO WILL DAMAGE YOUR ECU.

Click here for instructions on how to ship in your 2004-2005 AccessPORT for update (SAFEST OPTION)

Click here for instructions on how to perform the 2004-2005 AccessPORT Upgrade (AT YOUR OWN RISK)

After running this update, you will need to download and install the new AccessPORT maps available below. This does not effect any 2002-2003 AccessPORT owners.
I am ordering this from HotSubaru.com (Subaru of Dallas). Will the AccessPORT itself already be upgraded?

Tough to say how long the AP has been on the shelf. The upgrades aren't that old yet. You can tell if the CD it's shipped with is the newwest version or not. If not, then you'll need to do the upgrade. Not hard by anymeans, just follow the instuctions. You ECU and AP are not something you want to render useless.

Just wanted to chime in on my AccessPort experience. Bought a 2004 FXT AT accessport from hotsubuaru. On the first attempt to upload the files, kept getting stuck on intitialzing and created a check engine light cel but car still worked fine. Called Cobb, they said it sounded like a faulty AP Cable, so they overnighted me a new one. Got the new cable and was able to reflash the ecu, but after about 100 miles got another cel. Shifting was kind of harsh, and idle was too high, made it a little difficult to stop. Called Cobb again, and they thought it sounded like I had a manual fxt ap (said Auto on the box and the AP itself). So dowloaded the conversion off of their website and loaded the AT maps. Things have worked fine since. Approx 1000 miles. I am happy with it now, but for about a week I was sweating bullits. I guess my point here is to make sure you set up your pc accessport tool, take a look at the maps that are preloaded on your accessport and make sure their the latest versions and correct drivetrain before you attempt your first reflash. I got mine, read the instructions, sounded like a no brainer, and went for it. You read about all of the burned up ECU's, and it is not a good feeling when the info on the AP screen doesn't progress like the instructions say they will. You just pray your car will start when you give up.

I got my AP from HotSubaru a few weeks ago, and it already had the update in it (confirmed that via a phone call to Cobb).
