Default 99 rs airfilter questions

i looked yesterday at my airfilter and then was curious what the second box is for i opened it up and found nothing inside. the person i bought it from must have put a K&N airfilter in the first box. is there soppost to be a filter in the second box? my car runs fine without it can i buy silicone hosing and run it from the first airbox straight to the engine and delete the second box? i would just buy a intake setup but i dont want to screw with the maf going bad its gone bad ounce with the stock setup.

Mine had that done to it too, they took out the second box out and used the front box with filter ,but some hoses were put in strange places,so I bought a cold air and then I saw where all the hoses had to be hook up the car idel a lot better and ran a lot better,so good luck on yours, hope it works.
