Default faint noise - rattling from under car of some kind?

Hi guys, I am having a strange noise that i'm not sure if it's normal or not.

I have a 2005 RS with less than 1,000 miles on it, 5 spd.

At speeds of about 60 mph + it is noticeable. It sounds almost like if you were to put a playing card in a bicycle wheel, but fainter, and a little more metallic. It seems like it is coming from under the car, under the front passenger seat.

Is this something to do with the exhaust? Like a heat shield or something? I am really stumped.

I wasn't sure if I should put this in the N/A forum or if this could be driveline related.

It doesn't matter if i'm on the gas or not, just needs to be at that speed. It is sometimes VERY faint around 40 mph, but gets noticeable at 60 mph+

Any ideas?

Me too! ..only on a 2001 RS w/ 52k instead. It started the day before yesterday.

It's different from the "bicycle spoke" noise I posted about last week, in case you've read that post.

Mine'll do it most noticeably around 3k RPM, in the same area of the car (front right passenger), and the general consensus from friends and my regular mechanic (w/out lifting the car) is that it's a heat shield.

I guess we'll find out if it gets worse.. or if the annoyance drives you to hoist the car up...

I'm not super concerned; unless it gets worse or I can't stand it anymore, I'm not fixing it until I do the exhaust work later this month.

Jack it up and take a look; debris could cause it as well.

might be a bad rob beering that is what it was when I had a similar rattle. I thought it was a heat shield until my engine died. Go see a dubaru dealership and have then fix it before it's too late and you end up like me.

I had a noise like you described and my dealer said it was the heat shield. Definitely take it in to be safe.

Yikes - well I hope it's just a heat shield rather than a rod bearing! They actually drove it yesterday and "didn't hear it" so I am going in on Monday morning to drive with a technician so that I can point it out to him.

I can reproduce it every time over 60 mph.

This weekend I'll run it up on the ramps and see if I can spot anything.

Thanks!

Guys I found out what this noise was. After 3 test drives at the dealer, one of the employees stuck his head out the window at low speed to see if he could hear it - and he did, but it was coming from the back.

So we get back and throw it on a lift, and find out there is this huge BOLT in my right rear tire. Like 2 inches long, threaded, flat tip bolt. Who knows how THAT got in there.

So I found the cause of the noise, which is good. Now I have to decide whether to get another RE92 or 4 new falken 512s/conti extremes/toyo proxes4 take your pick. On to the tire forum...

I'll cast my vote for a set of different tires.
