Default Smoke/Steam coming out of vents??

Hey there

I was driving on the freeway today when i turned my A/C off cause it was getting too cold. Sure enough 5 mins later i was sweating and needed to turn it on. Then all of a sudden smoke/steam started pouring out of the vents (w.t.hell is going on i thought???) I proceded to turn off the vents and pull over. When i went to turn them on again the smoke/steam was gone.

I can recreate the even by driving for a while w/out the A/C on (after having had it on for a while first) and then turning it back on again. FYI, the temp was about 90 outside and today is the only time its happened so i dont know if it will happen again tomorrow, whether its just the temp or what. The smoke/steam stops after about 10-15 secs and the car is fine afterwards. There is no smell but it looks really scary

Anybody else experienced this...it scared the **** out of me

It appears what you have is a loose nut behind the steering wheel. A Trunkmonkey should remedy your problem. You should be able to pick one up for under a grand.

Does the trunkmonkey usually come with it's own set of tools? I've been considering getting one.

The mist is normal. Think fog in a low lying valley before the sun burns it into vapor.

Hi Honduh,

You can sleep at night, now. This is NOT smoke. It is condensed moisture from the outside air. This becomes most noticable when there is a lot of humidity in the air. You may notice it even more when it's raining. The moisture from the outside air is drawn in, and your A/C rapidly cools it forming condensation.

Try this... duplicate your "smoke" situation, and then switch your A/C to "recirculate" mode. After a few seconds, you will notice the condensation ("steam") disappear.

So no worries, mate! (feeling Australian there for a second!)

I had this happen to me on the 94/894 the other day... at first i was like ***?! but then I realized it was only condensation that was forming in the vents. What did disturb me though is that mold is much more apt to form there now

you can take care of the mold by turning off the AC and turn on the heat for a minute or so before shutting off the car.

yeah it seems like its not just me experiencing it. I figured out it was just steam after a while cause smoke always smells and whatever was coming out of the vents didn't. It still scared the shiht out of me though
