Default '13 WRX stock fog lights - barely noticable

The factory fog lights on my WRX aren't noticeable at all in my opinion.

Where I live, surrounded by 7 reservoirs, many mornings and late evenings the fog coming off the water is so thick visibility sometimes drops to 25' or less.

When I turn the factory fog lights on my WRX, I can barely even notice they're on.

On my previous car, I had Hoen Endurance(http://www.hoen-usa.com/fog.htm) bulbs in the fogs which were a deep yellow/amber color and in foggy nights, they really made a difference.

However I was wondering if there was anything besides those Hoen bulbs that I could upgrade too.

Are there HID systems that can replace the entire stock housing and aren't retrofits?

Have you tried aiming them up? If you pop off your side fender vents, there's a screw in there on the fog light housing that is adjustable. I noticed this to and doing this helped out a lot. I also have PIAA plasma ion bulbs which I'm not sure how they compare to what you had previously, but they are pretty good.

+1 on aiming

I'm not sure how the oem fog lights compare to my oem bugeye foglights. Fwiw, the oem bugeye foglights do a good job focusing light into a horizontal band, with minimal intensity above and below the band. But what this means is that unless aimed properly, it might end up pointing too high, which won't really light up the road surface, or too low, which will light up areas below the engine hood line.

HID for units that low on the ground for thick fog is a very tricky thing. It could be difficult to minimize the glare from road surface reflection, that it might more than offset the extra (& supposedly beneficial) intensity of an HID.

Try the Hella Micro DE (halogen fog version) or Ford Fusion's oem fog projector (both 1st & 2nd gen seem to be quite decent afaik).

Bugeye fogs were a ton better than 08+ fogs, which are little more than a useless decoration. You could get small aftermarket ones, or upgrade your main headlight lighting.
