Default Is it safe to do a core exchange for a 2004 ECU?

I was just wondering if anyone can think of any issues with doing a core exchange on a 2004 ECU? The ECUTek tuner for me is over a thousand kms away and for now I'd like to just to take an off the shelf reflash and get the dyno tune later. I only have one car and really would like to avoid any downtime. They offered a core exchange so that I would have no downtime. Are all the 2004 ECUs identical? Will I possibly have any issues with putting a different ECU in my car?

you can use any ecu from the GD series in your car, the only drawback with a model year ECu prior to yours such as a MY02 is that you'll have some cel lights on, nothing to be alarmed about. and yes ALL MY04 ecus are alike.

Here is a Email from Trey Cobb a couple years ago reagarding ECU's. (could differ slightly with 2005 and up though)

Quote:
All 2002-2004 ECUs will technically run any 2002-2004 WRX. However, installing a 2003-2004 ECU into a 2002 will cause a check engine light.
Otherwise, they will all work very well together. Using a 2002 ECU in a
2003-2004 will not cause a check engine light. Additionally, we can upgrade your firmware in the ECU to match whatever model you may have. The only issue is again the 2002 ECUs are missing one piece of hardware but it will not create a driving or check engine light problem though you may not be 100% Federal Emissions legal due to an emission system design change between
2002 and 2003.

Let me know if you have any other questions, or feel free to search and/or post on our Forum.
