I am looking to get a new aftermarket exhaust for my 01 impreza RS, but i need some suggestions.
I want a low, good quality sounding exhaust, but one that isn't so loud as some of the ones i have heard. I don't mind it being a little louder than normal, but i also don't want to be heard coming down the street a mile away. First off, i love music, and have a decent sound system in my suby. i would rather not have my sterio fighting with my exhaust system to be heard while i am driving. But more importantly, the reason i don't want a super loud exhaust is because i am a college student about to be entering the engineering career field, and want a semi-respectable car that i can still pull up to job interviews and work meetings in. I don't want future bosses to hear me coming a block away and think "another punk kid" everytime i drive up. Do they make what i am looking for or am i just dreaming? Does anyone have any suggestions for a high quality, rich sounding exhaust that isn't deafenning?

i thought i had read a lot of things saying that the stromung exhaust was really loud. That and that it rusts out really easy. But you are saying that stromung dual tip exhaust is one of the quiestest ones?

The mild steel ones are the ones that are notorious for rusting. If you get the stainless steel, you'll be fine.
I also suggest the Stromung, not for the noise, but if you want a respectable car, they look pretty stock. |

i will have to look into those 2 as well. I have been doing a lot of reading and i am hearing that the STI exhaust is very quiet and gives a nice preformance increase, but most of those posts are several years old, so not sure where to find one now.
Also, i have never pretended to be a super car guru, so excuse the newbie question, but would welding in a resonator with any performance exhaust change the performance increase at all? how much of a sound different would one make? |

You will not notice any decrease in performace as an exhaust sytem doesnt get you that much anyways! It will however take some of the raspyness out of the exhaust note. Leaving you with a "Cleaner" sound. also FYI 2.25 inch piping is what you should look for in the midpipe.

Thanks for the info Pat. that might end up being what i do. I like the look of the stromung and have heard good things about it (except for the rusting, so thanks for clearing that up ej25), so maybe one of those with a resonator or 2 maybe would be the way to go. Still open to more suggestions though.

Your other option for the same $$$ is to get a custom cat-back made. I'll be doing this shortly, still have to decide on a muffler though.
2.25" piping througout with a resonator in the midpipe. Be sure that the resonator you pick has the same internal diameter of the rest of your piping and that it is perforated (as opposed to louvered) inside. Bill |
