Default Tuna lite not seeing UTEC...

So I slapped the tuna lite in today, It works fine as far as the wb reading goes, but it is not seeing the UTEC. I checked and the serial connection at the back of the unit is solid, and the cable should be good as when I unhook it from the tune, the laptop can connect to the utec just fine.

Is there anything I need to do with the UTEC to get the tuna to see it?

Any ideas???

Mine has trouble sometimes if I immediately crank the car. However, if I turn ignition ON, let UTEC boot up for a few seconds, then fire the starter up... the Tuna recognizes the UTEC every time.

I didn't do anything to the UTEC or Tuna, it was plug&play.

I thought about that while taking a crap when I came home (I love giving too much info )

I havent been back out to the car to check it out yet

The fact that you had a similar experience gives me much hope though

So I double checked things, and now the laptop isnt seeingt eh UTEC either, which tells me that the cable is def bad. Which doesnt suprise me as its been beating around on the floor of the car for a year and a half. Either that or it has come loose from the utec... Will know tomorrow

On the positive side, Lowes had everything I needed to hook up my fuel pressure gauge tomorrow

Don't get me started on bad cables.

I had a cable that got pinched somewhere on my '02 WRX. It datalogged just fine. But when I tried to reflash, it crapped out right in the middle of the firmware flash. Took me a bit to troubleshoot, as I didn't even consider the cable at first.

Then I got a USB convertor which could datalog but could only flash successfully 1 out of 3 tries.

Anyway - sounds like you're on the right track...

also as t-wrx said, the utec must be booted up before the tuner so that it is "there" as the tuner does the serial handshake.

last time i had a bad cable i could control the utec while the laptop was in my lap, but not when it was placed on the passenger's seat next to me. totally pissed me off for a while until i figured it out!

When I turn on my ignition they both power up. How can you make the tuna boot up after the utec? Or does the 15 sec warmup on the tuna take care of that???

It was the power up sequence. I dont know why the utec wasnt seeingt he laptop when directly hooked that day, the laptop just might suck..

In any case, for now I am going to hook it up to the toggle switch I used to use for my driving lights.

dave, i tapped the tuner into the old cig lighter circuit. stole the entire circuit. that's acc buss power which is disconnected when the starter is energized. so the utec which is ecu powered stays on all the time the key is in RUN, and the tuner comes on when it comes back to RUN after CRANK.

for the cig lighter i ran a separate dedicated fused line directly from the battery. always powered which is nice to charge stuff in the car w/o the key on.
