Depends on the year and model motor. Any more info that might help?

Note: Vague descriptions beget vague answers.

you will get a ticking noise from your valvetrain if you are low on oil. check your oil. Generally, if no one has gone into your heads, you shouldn't need a valve lash adjustment. If someone has been into your heads for cams, etc, it could be your valve lash. A better description of the problem would get better answers.

ok sorry guys. it's a 1996 subaru impezra 2.2 liter and a 5 spd. it has about 107k miles on it. i always fill the oil, and i don't think anyone has done and internal work with my car. no matter what rpm or even just idel. makes this loud noise, not knocking, but closer to pinging. like tik tic tic tic tic tic. sounds like the lifter?

"Ticking" can be from injectors, lifters, rods, wrist pins etc. So, it could be anything from minor/meaningless to imminent failure. Even if you do post more info there is no way we can tell you for sure over the Internet what is wrong with your car. You should take it to a local dealer or shop that specializes in Subarus and have it diagnosed properly.

Do you have any aftermarket upgrades? I have headers and they make a tic tic noise.. but they're supposed to do that.
There is a great multitude of things it could be. Throwout bearing Timing belt tensioner Exhaust leak Piston Slap - which I do not think is happening |

time to change the oil. you probaly have a clogged oil passage.
my wagon will do this when the oil needs to be changed even if its full. |

Perhaps its a good time to invest in an automotive stethoscope... they can be very useful for tracking down noises.
another thing you can do is put a pipe up to your ear, then put the other end on various spots on the car, to track the noise down... a sound clip and beter description of the sound would also help Does it increase as RPM's go up? Is it louder when you first start the car? Try having someone put their hand over the tailpipe so you can track down any exhaust leaks.. edit: one other thing, with the car running and you under the hood, rev the engine by manually operating the throttle butterfly, while looking around / listening... check the crank pulley and other junk. Also you said the car has 107k on it, with no internal work... If the timing belt hasn't been done already, it definetely needs to be done. Good luck |

since it is your "beater" i wouldnt bother fixing it. just make sure the T-Belt is ok and it is full of fresh oils and you should be fine.
key word in that sentence being SHOULD. |

i have a 97 2.2 and mine ticks, esp when idleing. i get all kinds of weird nises idleing, like that ticking, some kind of screeching(loose belt?), etc. i also had a "warbling" noise too, but that was the AC(bearings were going). the solution to that was to cut te belt for the AC. as far as the rest goes, im not worrying about it. its got 108,000 miles on it, but i am planning on looking into it with a stethoscope.
oil used is 10w30 high rpm synthetic blend, that new stuff from Quaker State, filter is Bosch. not that that should mean anything, but in case anyone was wondering. |

oh yeah. my problem is not an exhaust leak. my exhaust is leaking(fixing soon) but not aroudn the engine. i was told about sticking lifters or something by a friend(and it might have been mentioned above) but I'm not worrying about it. in 3 years, after i get out of PennTech, im ripping the engine out for something better. for now it just has to get me from here to there.

Something else occured to me... Could it be the airbox being loose? Mine was loose and made some weird squeaking noises.

My vote is a collapsed HLA. 96 was the last year of the hydraulic lash adjusters, and if they stop "pumping up" then you'll get a nice loud clicking sound coming from the valve cover.
How does it run otherwise? With a collapsed HLA you might be a little down on power but its not really catastrophic. The good news is the 96 is non interference, but I'd still check the timing belt tensioner before it does this: In retrospect mine was making a lot of ticking and other strange noises before it finally exploded. ![]() |

I had the same problem, for me it was the valve clearance. Here is how I fixed it: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...nce+adjustment

seeing how much work is involved in fixing the annoying noise, i think ill just deal with it. my L's my first car (see "beater") and only has to last me 3 more years til im out of tech school.
then ill buy an RS. and mod the f*** out of it. |
