Default Alarm goes off when opening UNLOCKED doors. WTH??!!

I just got a used WRX wagon with security feature. I had an 02 sedan for a year so I know how the alarm works and how it should work.

Anway, with the new wagon I have this wierd stuff going on with the alarm. A few times I have gotten out of my car and left it unlocked. I didn't touch the lock button on the door or on the fob. I go back 10-15+ minutes later and open the unlocked door, and the alarm goes off. What the heck is going on? It doesn't happen all the time, just seems to happen if I leave it sit for more than 10 or 15 minutes. All the doors are unlocked, and the alarm still goes off. This isn't supposed to happen is it?? I don't get it, this never happened on my 02 sedan, and this is an 02 wagon.

Any ideas?

Hm, that is strange. I know on a lot of aftermarket alarms, such as my clifford, there is a feature called passive arming, so that even if you don't lock and arm the car with the remote, the alarm will arm by itself after a certain amount of time. Maybe this is a feature on the factory system and it is enabled on your car? But I would think if it was it'd lock the doors too. Maybe someone with the factory alarm who knows more about it can chime in.

It sounds like the auto-arm feature of the factory alarm is set. Check your owners manual.

I have an '05 and I read it in the manual somewhere. It mentions that this feature can be enabled by the dealership, but then it might go into how to arm it. I don't remember exactly. I do remember that it arms the alarm system after a few minutes automatically, even if you don't lock the doors.

the previous owner had the passive arm enabled. there's a connector in the driver side door sill that needs to be disconnected to disable passive arm.

the owner's manual shows you how.
