Angry more bad happenings to my wrx

so, yesterday, I discovered a quarter sized ding on the door, but not a big deal, no paint damage etc. I figured I'll just get it pulled out. looks like a rock on the highway, but perfectly round. so, I was getting over the minor upset of that yesterday and thinking the whole paintless thing.

THIS morning, I was like Huhhh??? the left side of the bumper is white, yellow, black, and green. all cosmetic but it looks yucky. Where is my nice silver paint?? ***** IDIOTS can't park in Cambridge. I've had enough of on street parking.

quoted $450 to get repainted. does this sound right to people?

also, any suggestions on how to get offstreet parking (short of moving out which I will do next year)? put an ad in the paper? ask the garages nearby? get a doberman to guard it?

Oh no Tasha,
You've gotta move out here to the lovely Rhode Island suburbs. Plenty of garaged parking and wide open streets!

$450 sounds steep to me. I got my bumper repainted for $280 -- I mean, completely resanded and repainted and finished at DeLeo's Autobody in Cambridge.

yes, the suburbs are a wonderful thing

oh, and that's cheap compared to what I've paid in the past.

Tasha,

You can probably buff out the non-factory colors with rubbing compund. As far as parking, see if anyone is willing to rent you a driveway or something. That's the only way your gonna get off street parking around there. Too bad someone has taken the driveway next to your place.

$450 for a bumper does sound a little steep. I would try DeLeo's, and see what they quote you.

Now I know why Brookline doesn't allow overnight on-street parking! So that people won't get their car dinged! Brilliant, isn't it?

Sorry for your mishap, Tasha. If I were you, I'd just use some touch-up paint to cover it. Wait until you move far far away, then get a new bumper or have it repainted nicely. I mean, what happened to you last night can happen easily again tomorrow, and the day after, as long as you're in the city.

Tasha,

I think I have some rubbing compound at home, so don't go buying any quite so fast.

speaking of rubbing compound.

While demonstrating that I didn't need a bottle opener to open a bottle of Sam's summer ale.. I dropped a large folding table on the side of Kris's car.. I know.. I suck.

eheh.

no real damage.. minor marks.

a few clearcoat scratches on the drivers door..
sorry kris.

he took it in stride and then helped me with my brakes.

but the one thing that would have made the mark dissapear.. was the one thing I didn't have

Rubbing compound!

The two major parking garages in Cambridge are on the east side - the Cambridge Galleria Mall, and the one attached to the Kendall Square Marriot Hotel. The Galleria allows you to park there all day for a "semi-reasonable" price - like $20 or so. And it's got a free shuttle running to the Kendall T stop every 15 minutes.

As for places to live next year:

Kennedy Biscuit Lofts
100 Memorial Drive
Worthington Place
Cambridgeside Apts
University Park Apts.
1474 Mass Ave (I think it's 1474.. not 100% sure?)

These are all in Cambridge and have parking garages. Be prepared to pay through your nose though... I finally got out of there a month ago and now live on a dead end street a few miles north. I haven't looked back - I suggest you do the same and leave while you can, before the inflated housing prices infect the surrounding towns more than they already have. A few miles commute is worth the few hundred bucks on body work and inconvenience suffered each year, IMHO, especially once you figure out the local streets to take each morning to avoid traffic.

Car Mart Subaru in Wilmington, just the other side of Woburn, did the bumper on my Outback for $200. But that was sort of part of a package deal...

It took them 5 weeks to finish the car, but the bumper DOES look nice now!

Well, DID look nice... my girlfriend scraped it while moving the car 10 feet.

My grandparent's former home is located off of Mass Ave between Porter & Harvard square (nearer to Sommerville & Arlington). Their neighbors had (have) a driveway ajoining my grandparents driveway, and would rent out their driveway. When visiting my Grandparents, the neighbors would often bitch at us when we parked on our grandparent's own driveway as they used this to get access to the street. While my evil Step-Grandmother still lives there (and doesn't drive), she will be moving out shortly.

Oh and before you try out some rubbing compound, try this :

A paper towel & some Formula 409 / Fantastik (household cleaner) will often remove other paint that has rubbed off onto your bumper. Try using some of this BEFORE resorting to rubbing compound.

Its hard to say if they have rubbed the paint off of your bumper, or mearly left some of their paint on your bumper.
