Default trouble starting 92 legacy

My legacy stalled out on me last night,

It had been driving fine all day, maybe 300 miles or so that day, but not all at once. On my way home, as I came around a sharp turn, the engine stalled, and I managed to pull it off the road. No sputter, shaking, rattling, abnormal noises or anything of the such. I had a half tank of gas, and no CEL light, so I tried to start it up again, no luck. In the ACC position, all the electric works fine, windows, radio, lights, but nothing when I turned it to the start position. The engine didnt turn over, no clicking, no noises of any kind. Ended up calling for a ride home, and the car sat there overnight.

I returned in the morning, and tried to start it. No luck. I checked all the fuses under the dash, and under the hood. They all looked fine. I checked the battery, and jiggled the wires. It looked good, no corossion, and the connections were tight. I tried to start the car again, and it worked now!

I ran fine for half of the day, then now it's doing the same thing again. Any ideals what this could be?

You positive it's not making a clicking noise when you try to start it?

So you're just driving along and it stalls out?

Try pulling the ECU codes, or verify that there aren't any in there. Instructions on how to pull the codes and what they are can be found on my website

Yeah, its not making any clicking noises or any abnormal sounds of any kind when I tried to start it. The radio and everything else worked fine, it just would not even attempt to turn over.

I tried to check the codes as described on your page, but it seems that the check engine light is faulty, and I'll need to get that fixed before I can get the codes.

The car did start for me today, so I drove it around for a bit. And as I expected, I didnt start the last time I went to start it and go home. It didn't die on me like the other night while I was driving it, it just didnt start when I came out of the store.

I'll work on getting the check engine light fixed, and try to get those codes and post them here. Thanks for any ideals you may have, havin to call for a ride really suxs.

Fixed the check engine light. There wasn't a bulb in it...kinda curious why it was taken out...hrm.

Anyway, I didnt see any codes in there. On both the black and green connectors, it flashed a steady 1/2 second flash.

So, no codes, no abnormal noises, just randomly not starting, or stalling out then not starting.

Any ideals??

hmmm.....how long does it drive before it stalls out and dies? I wonder if you have a short/break in the wiring somewhere that is temperature dependent.

Well, its hard to say...The day it first started acting up, I drove it quite a few hours. Got stuck, called a ride, and returned in the morning. Tried to start it a few times in the morning, and it didnt start for about 10 mins. IT finally started.

Second time, when I got it started that morning, I drove it maybe 30 mins down into town. Ran around town stopping at several stores for a few mins each stop. Didnt start when I came out of the last shop and was gonna head home. Left the car in town and got another ride home.

Started fine next morning, first try, been running good all day...got my check engine light fixed, and Im showing no codes.

hmmm.....I'm a little baffled. You might want to try posting on www.bbs.legacycentral.org as well. It's a site primarily for the first gen legacy.

when you turn the key to "on" or "acc" you note that the radio works etc. When you put it into start (assuming it doesn't start) do the radio and accessories go OFF? I had an 88 soob stall on me just as you described and it did turn out to just be the battery terminal clamps. Radio and stuff would work fine but as soon as I tried to start it, nothing. My theory is that there is extra resistance in the connection.... not enough to give you problems with your lower current devices such as radio, but when you try to pull high current to start the car, the resistance prevents it.

Take a piece of sandpaper to those terminals and the insides of the clamps. Or get one of those metal brush things they sell at auto parts stores for $3. After I cleaned mine (like yours, didn't look that dirty) no more problems.

If this doesn't help, try following the negative cable and make sure there is a good solid ground to the chassis/engine. Pull the bolt off and clean under it. Positive should have good connection to the starter also. I've also had bad starters (non subaru) that if I was unlucky wouldn't do anything, but then if I turned the motor shaft (square bolt on outside center of starter) it would start. Like there was one position in the motor where it wouldn't work, everywhere else seemed fine though.

Actually, the radio and other accessories are supposed to turn off when the ignition is in the start position. but I do agree....check the battery connections.

It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to take the car to an auto parts place and have them test the electrical system.

Well, I did clean the terminals and tighten them real good when I was fixing the instrument panel the other day. And, its given me no problems for the past 2 days since I did that. I'm hoping that was the problem. Though I thought I would atleast hear some noise from the starter if that was the case. I'll trace my gounds back to the frame too.

I'm having a very similar problem.. I drove my car in to work today and it drove fine shut off the car and went inside. Came back out a few min. later and tried to start it. Nothing! I have power, the radio and accesories work, but the starter won't even click. I can't figure it out. The best thing I have come up with is the clutch starter interupt switch at the bottom of the clutch stoke has gone bad. any other ideas would be well appriciated.
Thanks

Just to add to my post above I have checked all the fuses and they are fine. And just to describe exactly what is happeneing I go to star the car and it's as though I'm trying to start it without the clutch pushed in. no clicking no grinding no noise whatsoever. Also the accesories are suposed to shut off when the key is turned to start and they do just like they are supposed to. I have also checked the battery terminals and they are fine. I haven't checked the ground cables but they appear fine, and even if they weren't, wouldn't I have no power?

The accessories require very little amperage, so if theres something wrong with either battery cable then they would still work. Starting however requires a lot of amps, and with a messed up cable you just cant get enough through it.

Dont just check the terminals, check the end of the cable for corrosion.

Did you try cleaning/roughing them up like was stated above?

And are you in FoCo, maybe going to school?

Well I roll started it to the dealer and I'll have it looked at tomorrow. I did end up double checking the grounds I could get to, and the baterey cables but no go. Thanks guys but I have to have my car tomorrow (not bloody likely) so I have to just bite the bullet and pony up. I still think it's the clutch iterlock switch, but I have to get a seatbelt fixed (free) and my seat bracket recall (free) oh and I need more crush washers so off to Delebach I go. Thanks again!

oh and yes I am back in the Fort now, gotta update that.
