Default ECM / ECU Compatibility

Hi,

I have a 1991 EJ22 body style B10 AWD L wagon. The ECM in the car has these markings : EE in huge letter followed by 31711 AA911. A64-000 822 1381 seems like the serial number.

I found a 1993 ECM at my auto wrecker with these markings: HS in huge letter followed by 31711 AC031. JA64000 RL6 2710 seems to be the serial number.

Are they compatible? Interchangeable? I looked at the PCB inside and they look different. Thank you!

First off, is your legacy manual or auto? The 90-91 manual & auto's have different ECU's, and match the specific type of sensors in the engine. So depending on what you have you need to find an ECU from a 90-91 with the same transmission type.

The 92-94 ECU's aren't really compatible either. There's some things you could do to make it work if you have an automatic, but it would involve snipping some wires, and possibly dealing with rich/lean a/f issues due to the injectors being different between the 90-91 & 92-94 models. So I wouldn't recommend it.

Hi,

It's an auto. Your reply pretty much answered my question, thank you! I guess I won't be mucking around with no 92-94 ECU. BTW, what "improvements" were made to the 92-94 models?

There were slight things here and there. headlights, styling, minor stuff. Check out www.bbs.legacycentral.org for info.
