Default 2.2+wrx heads need cams as badly as 2.5+wrx heads?

So I am doing my motor like next week. I was going to go with a full V7 motor azcs and all, but apparently it wont pass emissions with that ecu, and since the usdm ecu will throw CELs from no TGV's, the V7 is just not going to happen.

Which leaves me with 2 choices
Choice 1
USDM STI shortblock+crawford pistons+crower cams- about 4400 installed

Choice 2
2.2 turbo shortblock+crawford pistons -- maybe 3700 installed? around there anyway.

In any case, I would like to go up inn displacement, I will be running a VF22 for the time being, and going to probably a green later, and RA gears.

I know with the 2.5, you have the powerband of a truck without cams, and I could do cams, but I REALLY need to keep this under 4k if at all possible, which means the 2.5 is something I need to avoid if at all possible. Which brings me back to the 2.2t block. Both of these are brand new shortblocks.
My question is this, do I NEED the cams on the 2.2 like the 2.5, or will it be ok? Basically I have heard the 2.5 +stock cams=un fun powerband because it falls off SO hard up top.

And are there any downsides durability wise to the 2.2? Isnt it the strongest block subaru ever made? Wont the oil squirters make it even better?

Hmm sounds like a tough choice man. I would go with cams just for the simple fact they are better than the stockers and they are going to give you the power you are looking for.

that is my setup 2.2t cp pistons, eagle rods, worked wrx heads, and usdm sti cams. basically erik's old motor, but Im putting forged aftermarket rods instead of the stock ej22t. fp green + ra gears, should be sick, but I would look into going shimless design of the new wrx heads and raise that rev limit.
(i'd tell you how it is, but my motors in the machine shop getting built now) should have it tuned shortly.)

other things to think about in addition to your project, sti water pump, new cam and crank sensors, piston rings, cometic head gaskets, better headstuds, big maf, etc...

or, just go for the gusto and get some real cams.

4k motor alone? or is that including the gears?

I know for a fact people have passed with wrx swapped v7's..

The problem i am having i this MAY be due to the jdm harness, but i am not totally sure honestly..

I went in again today and had the same problem, but the guy doing this one was much better, and told me the problem is the machine connects fine, but then when he starts my car the machine doesn't realize it is running, and that is when it times out and fails.. I am not sure what is causeing this.. Obd2 port works fine so i am out of ideas..

Either way i got my inspection sticker
