Default Need help 96 2.2l wont rev over 4k will driving

my 96 impreza has a problem reving past 4k rpms in pretty much all gears but mainly 3rd and 4th. it cuts of like when you redline. i know it has a couple of engine codes that are being thrown one has to do with i think the maf sensor and the other is the vehical speed sensor . i was wondering if either of those were the problem. this is really annoying when you try to pass someone and suddenly the car wont accellerate cause it seems to be redlining but at 4k please help me

For the most part, people who have this problem either have a dirty/broken MAF or it could possibly be the throttle position sensor. Though I would lean toward the MAF.

If you pull the MAF sensor out of the intake (Carefully!) and the car is able to rev past 4k then it is either broken or dirty.

Searching a bit in this forum may reveal some better answers. GL!

HEHEHE...I just fixed this problem on my 95 scooby...

MAF sensor for sure. Try cleaning it...then try replacing it...if this doesn't work, check the wires. Two of mine were snapped in the middle

speed sensor is in the tranny and shouldn't be too much of a problem, but may impact your speedo

cheers,

Alternatively, it could be your ENTIRE problem.

Your ECU won't let the engine rev over 4k under load when it's parked. But with no speed sensor, the car _thinks_ you're parked, naturally enough.

Searches will reveal more on this.

Yes it's the speed sensor. If the ECU doesn't get this signal you will have a 4k rev limit.

Check the MAF..

I pulled mine yesterday just to see what happens and you hit the rev limter at 4K.

sorry I didn't specify...it could be EITHER. What CEL codes are you getting? You should be OBDII, so hit up AutoZone for a free CEL check. They'll tell you the codes.

I only say it's definitely the MAF sensor because that's exactly the problem I had when mine went. My speed sensor was loose and all that happened was my speedo didn't work at all. Car wasn't revving over 4K anyway due to the MAF sensor, so I can't tell ya if the speed sensor put the car in "limp home" mode.

But seriously...check the MAF sensor because that's what it sounds like. If your speed sensor was busted, your speedometer shouldn't be working either.

lack of signal from the speed sensor send the ECU into limp mode. this is one of the rare non-dangerous problem that can do that, and it is to prevent mileage-screwing. otherwize, all major engine problems detected by the ECU will also cause the limp mode to occur. All the codes you get could been related like engine speed and vehicle speed not matching, or engine load vs speed not matching...
