Default Turbo w/ no intercooler?

Aftermarket Turbo for my RS without an intercooler a bad idea? I ghave seen same stage one kits that don't run intercoolers for the turbo, is this something to stay away from? I am not looking to boost the car to 1 bar or anything, just 5psi will sufice, If I am going with low boost will a non-intercooled setup work. Thanks

Running 5psi with enough fuel will work fine with no intercooler, from what I've seen. The operative phrase being "with enough fuel".

you can run a kit w/no intercooler...

the Minnam stage I has no IC and can still maintain a serious punch... as far as long term + and - effects?
Well i dont know anyone who's been running one long enough...

As long as you dont get boost hungry you should be ok.. for quite some time to come.

I ran for about 2 months at 5-6psi with no intercooler. The car was pretty quick, but after putting on the IC I saw a drop in intake temps of 40 degrees celsius and there was more power at the same boost levels. I'm not even running the most efficient IC, but it was inexpensive and effective. The key is fueling and to be careful; if it starts to ping back off and you should be ok. However I'd recommend a BOV or diverter valve to help the longevity of the turbo.

Ok whats the best Turbo kit for under 3K? I know I know a broad question, I would love and intercooler and BOV but can it be done under 3K? I just bought a House in San Fran and want to conserve a little cash :-)

save your money for the house. seriously. I've just bought one too and now wish I hadn't spent so much money on the car.

Given that you can obtain a Subaru Air to Water IC for about $100. and another $70 for an oil cooler core, water pump, switch and ods and ends it makes no sense not to run an IC, you are not obligated to buy the $600 Spearco one the vendor is selling.

I don't care where you get the kit, it will end up costing you way more than $3000. If you want to go fast cheaply, get a nitrous system. If you can afford it, the Venom kit is the safest and nicest. If you can't afford the $1300 price tag, then the Zex would be my second choice at $500.
My car is easily in the 13's with the Venom kit.

Thumbs up

Build it yourself, I made mine all at just a little over 2g. That is with an Rallispec intercooler. I bought my turbo off a '89 Ford Thundercoupe and rebuilt it for less than $300. I sent it to get balanced for about $60 and it's as good as new. What more could you ask for! The only thing that will cost you cash is the I/C and turbo piping. I can build the turbo piping for $700 that is $100 less than ASR and alot cheaper. I could only find one place that would build up and downs seperate from a kit and that was ASR. That is why I am offering them to everyone else. I can build them with less bends and look awesome too! Email me if you have any other question at Mweber@neboiler.com

Good luck!

I agree, Make your own. Mine only cost me about $1100, but I spent the money in the wrong places. I have no intercooler and it's fine up until 7 pounds. Check out my sit and email me if you have questions.

Turbo Legacys came without an IC. A friend runs one with 11psi no problem. Mine can run about 10psi no problem on the 1.8L ECU.

subachad,

I remember you from Vegas last year @ SEMA. I rode in your car, was supposed to meet up later that night at some clubs. But unfortunately, our Hotel was way the F-out there, so I couldn't make it. No more Vegas, huh? Where in Cali?

Now for Turbo content:

I just installed the LudeSpeed Kit on a friend's car last weekend, he doesn't have the IC yet. It runs fine for now @ 5psi, but he said it does get pretty Hot when sitting in traffic and under hard driving.

I have the JCS GB Kit w/VF-23, so I have about $2,800 into the kit itself. Now they cost about $3,800 I believe. Then I'm using Nissan injector's ($240), Weapon-R FPR ($95) Apex-i AVC-R ($410).

But I have all this because I run 8psi everday, then higher at the track. The car ran good without all the other goodies @ 5psi.

And I have to mention: I ran 13.3 @ 103.5 last night.
