Default Yet another VA emissions failure thread

I know this has been covered before, but I thought I'd plug in the numbers that I failed with and see if anyone has any specific suggestions.

HC ppm: limit - 110 idle - 233 (Fail) 2500 rpm - 107 (Pass)
CO%: limit - 0.75 idle - 1.07 (Fail) 2500 rpm - 0.82 (Fail)
NO ppm: N/A

I use only 93 octane, and I've lately been adding fuel injector cleaner about every 3rd-4th time I fill up. I've got Borla headers, Stromung cat/mid, Flowmaster muffler, Ganzflow intake and a high-flow air filter.

I've recently changed the spark plug wires, but the plugs themselves might be due for a change as well. The air filter is probably overdue for a cleaning. Also, I've never changed the PCV since I bought the car two years ago (I've put about 50k miles on it since then). I'm assuming I should probably go ahead and do this anyways.

Lastly, it's been suggested that I should pour some toulene in beforehand. Anyone have other suggestions? Anything I'm missing?

Thanks!
-Rob

try some seafoam (evangelo was off by 80 clicks one one of the fields, ad it brought it down significantly...but he was still off by 10 to pass)

and some lucas fuel injector cleaner (the only **** that works) mix when you fill up your tank.

and make sure your cat is nice and hot.

iirc, pcv will help with oil consumption but not with emissions

Slap the stock cat back on it and put a more restrictive paper element on the intake.

Are you running any engine management?

Here are my numbers from a few weeks back with the entire exhaust system changed over except the 3rd cat.

I had to face the sniffer today. I to do what I always do, take the car in and see the results. I am running COBB engine management, Crucial Racing Thermal Coated Uppipe, Crucial Racing Thermal Coated Downpipe, Stock 3rd cat, and the stock cat-back.

Car was run with an idle and a 2500 RPM test.

VIRGINIA HC ppm limit 110

My HC ppm at idle 38
My HC ppm at 2500 RPM 25

VIRGINIA CO % Limit 0.75

My CO % at idle 0.01
My CO % at 2500 RPM 0.04

For the record:

I did NOT add anything to the fuel system. (i.e. Xylene or Methanol)
I did NOT switch to some super secret COBB emissions map.
I did NOT bolt anything back on the car.

I ran what I always run and what has dynoed at 200+ WHP and 210+ Wheel torque. This is the way the car should have come.

The stock cat-back comes off next month!!

I don't actually have the stock cat to put back on. I did a complete swap with EndlessShine last year when he getting ready to sell. No engine management. Do you think temporarily putting in a normal air filter would work? I still have the stock intake I could put back on as well.

How hot was your car when you had your test done?
Remember, the further the cat is down the exhaust stream the more time it takes to light-off.
You might want to try fuelon power additive (www.fuelon.com) I knew people with turbo porsches who would pass VA emissions w/o any cats using it.

My car had been running for a while, but I ended up turning it off for maybe up to 10 mins before they were finally ready for me to pull in. Didn't really think much about it. Next time I'll leave it running.

A stock cat and the stock airbox will get you back where yoiu need to be. I had the same issue with my 240 w/ SR20. I took a sweater and covered the intake and it passed

They sell a bottle of stuff at Autozone or Advance that is actually supposed to help you pass emissions. I forget what its called now but its designed specifically for passing the emissions tests.
