Question looking for mods to bump a WRX's hp - without ECU mods, etc.

i'm looking to get 18 inch wheels for my rex...i understand that doing so will result in a slower car. THUS, i'm interested in bumping the hp (slightly) to compensate the "bigger wheel/slower car" effect. what i'm considering is:

- K&N panel filter
- a less restrictive exhaust
- and maybe that uppipe thingy (is this another word for a header?)

i don't want to screw around with boost controlling, ECU adjustments, turbo timers, etc.

i would like to bump my ride to 250hp...will these mods have any appreciable affect on hp (20 hp gain realistic)?

thx,
mister newbie 97

oh yeahh, any suggestions to where (tuning shop/vendor) i should look. i'm looking for a one-stop shopping experience. none of that piece meal stuff for me.

20 extra hp should be *easily* attainable with silencer removal, K&N, and a good exhaust.

I know you said you don't wanna "screw around" with boost controlling, but that is the biggest bang for the buck on turbo cars. With a small and easy to install/uninstall investment of $50-$75 on an MBC you'll see 20hp and then some. Pick up a K&N for another $50 and you'll be happy.

I don't know your reasonings ( warranty concerns maybe) but an MBC will uninstall in just a couple of minutes and you can plug the solenoids back in and take your car to the dealer.

If you have other concerns.. please disregard this post.

Would a cat-back exhaust really provide any power gains? I've heard people posting about their new exhausts making their cars faster, but I often wonder if that's more a factor of the reduced weight of their wallet in their butt dyno

I would say the best way to go is a full turbo back exhaust dropping the cat in the down pipe. 3" all the way back. Also remove the silencer and put in a ITG or K&N filter. These are the mods I made to my car and the performance gains are quite significant. Don't bother with a cat back, you aren't going to get much from that besides a cool sound. My car feels like a new car after I made these mods. The car has much more low and midrange power and the turbo spools up much quicker. This is how the car was supposed to feel. I have the BPM GT exhuaust which I would suggest to you if it wasn't an increadable pain to get a hold of (in an installable form). Great exhaust once it is installed but what a pain. I got the exhaust from Pam at ISR performance (great lady to do business with). You might want to try talking with her about exhaust options. The K&N I got from cobb tuning which I've heard also has a great exhaust system.

I am also staying away from the MBC's. I really don't want a dial that turns up my performance. All it takes is one turn to 11 (if you catch my referance) and you start blowing IC hoses or even worse your engine. I am waiting to install the Cobb unichip with a boost controller. That way the computer controlls the boost and I am happy.

Good luck.

Sorry, I don't have my boost guage yet. I've heard that initially the boost is higher but then goes down as the ECU adjusts. That's kinda what it feels like to me also. But then again it could just be that I am getting used to the extra power now. I'll find out when I get my boost guage.

I hear people say.. downpipe.. up-pipe.. droping the cat(how many do the WRX's have anyways) .. sorry.. my vocabulary is building but need some mental projections to help out my mind... anyone want to take some time to explain.. pictures perhaps? thanks..

Question cobb tuning? scooby sports?? bpm???

the panel filter and silencer removal i can do...however, who is the s*** when it comes to exhaust systems? again, i don't want to fool around with boost controlling or anything. should i consider a complete (turbo back) or just a catback system. obviously the catback won't provide as much performance, BUT is that performance difference night and day (turbo back vs. cat back WITH the other 2 mods...silencer and panel filter)????

i'm new to the subie game, so who makes the better product? recommendations???

thx,
db97

Re: exhausts, "who is the s***?"

Scoobysport, without a doubt.

Over 4000 Impreza exhausts sold in 47 countries.

I don't think anyone else even comes close.
