I picked this one up when they were offering $.99 shipping. Worked like a charm.
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...156-003&depa=0

I also saw a few on ebay that looked to be very similar for about $10 shipped, but I've dealt with Newegg many times and they're great to work with and ship real quick.

Ok I just see what I can pickup locally. I am going to need two, one for the ST and another for the wideband (most likely LM-1) and have read that they should be two different ones so options are good.

For a Mac running VPC 7, it's important to have a cable with drivers for both Mac and the PC. They work together to connect via USB. Great Mac driver, no Windows driver, no workie.

I have the Prolific USB-Serial converter. They seem to be the OEM for lots of brands (maybe all).

I have the IOgear and cant upload maps. I can edit with it just fine. Its a toshiba laptop that has no serial port. I keep an old p133 laptop on hand to load maps as I have never found a convertor that would upload. A royal PITA.

Another fully functional radio-shack adapter here too. Used on 3 different laptops from an old PI MMX, a PII 333 and a P4 1.8. No issues at all.(except for the initial price paid...)

I'm using a keyspan adapter. Haven't tried to up/download maps or flash, just editing maps so far. works, windows is just annoying to set up.

Character send delay and line delay most likely. If you dump stuff down the line faster than the UTEC can read and store it...it will fail. I work with a few microcontrolers where I have to set a line delay to 20ms at least for it to work properly.

So what do you do when you have are data loggong, need the hasp installed and have say and LM-1, you would basically need 3 usb ports. My Lt only has two so am I stuck getting a hub and toting that around as well?

Is the character send delay and line delay and hardware setting, a driver setting, or a software setting?

You also might want to get one of these:

http://www.l-com.com/jump.jsp?lGen=d...ProductID=7632

It keeps me from having to keep my glovebox open. I can then route the cable out the bottom or back. Soon I'm going to mount a USB port somwheres...

Nice, I am thinking that I may eventually ditch the laptop and move to a carputer setup. Then I wouldn't have to deal with all the cable issues. I should see how the video would look on the aux in of my IVA-D900, not sure if the resolution is highenough to make the text legable.

All three

Try using Terra Term Pro (http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA002416/teraterm.html) and set the line delay to 10ms. If it works, its just the driver or hardware going really quick. If not, slow it down further until its just dog slow or it works.

Another satisfied radioshack USB/Serial user. Had one for a couple of years on my WRX, never failed to up/down-load.

One thing to consider with laptops and RS-232 (serial) ports is that a lot of laptops don't put out true RS-232 signal levels. The formating is correct, but the actual voltage levels are off. It wouldn't surprise me if some of the usb to rs-232 adapters were similar.
