Default Advice on 10" sub: Elemental Design vs. Infinity vs. Image Dynamics

All similar pricing, all seemingly well-liked. I want the Dual Voice Coil to get the most out of my Alpine amp. I'll build a sealed box myself. Budget and room for only one. I'm definitely more about SQ - Pixies, Nirvana, QotSA, Go-Gos. Has anyone had experience with any of these specific speakers or the brands? Difference between the two ED components? Thanks for the help!

The Elemental Design 11Kv.2 at $115 shipped:

The Elemental Design 11Ov.2 at $175 shipped:

The Infinity Kappa Perfect 10.1d at around $140 shipped:

or the Image Dynamics ID10 v.3 D4 at $130 shipped:

I recently dug out my Pixies stuff and been listening to it quite a bit lately. Can't say the same for the Go-Gos though It would help to know what amp you were going to run the sub off of (which model Alpine?). If I was forced to pick out of those now though, I think the ID10v3 may be the one.

I used an ED 16Kv.2 since january, and i'm really happy with it. Last week, we received the 11Kv.2 I ordered for my father. It's really a nice sub. the top end is a little bit cleaner than the 16kv2 IMO. I had it in a 0.45 cuft box. comparatively to an alpine type S 10", (wich use twice as much room), the low-end is a bit less efficient, but in tightness and transparency, it's literally a night and day difference. For rock music, (I tried Nirvana and AC/DC), this sub definately get the job done. It hit tight as hell, is very transparent, and will pickup higher notes and double-kick with ease. In a noisy car like an impreza, it don't seem to get really loud, but in my father's acura, driven by 300w rms, it is definately loud enough to put a large smile in his face.
The Ov.2 just does everything better. tighter, cleaner, louder (handle 50% more power). The 13Ov.2 is one of the best rock-music sub you can currently get, while the others size do everything as good, simply quieter or louder.

Amp is an Alpine MRD-M300 I picked up used.

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-rqXOUFf...p?I=500MRDM301

Not lots of power, but rumored to be underrated.

Don't knock the Go-Gos! Listen to the last album they did from 2001. New Pixies in 2006! Maybe. They're playing the shed circuit this summer.

So, given the amp I've got - more sub recommendations? I'd like to keep the cost down - is the $175 ED that much better than the $115 ED, considering I dion't need the power-handling capacity?

With the amount of power you are pushing the Ov2 isn't necessary at all. Wow I really should go out there and do a bit of an A/B test between my IDQ12 and 13Ov2 at some point huh? Any concerns with box size (like depth or anything)?

Hmm, I will need to check out the 01 album. Definately looking forward to the new Pixies album.

I guess I'm now choosing between the lesser ED or the ID. The price seems nice and I like the smaller manufacturers - not spending money on marketing like Infinity.

ED or ID.... ID or ED...

I'm goign to build a trapezoidal box to go behind the rear seat in the wagon, so space isn't really an issue. Smaller is better.

I have an 11k.v2 and a Alpine MRv-T320. I am very pleased...NiveEJ25 hit it right on the head. I mostly listen to Metal (mudvayne, sevendust, coal chamber) and the ED is great for the higher bass parts and the double kick drums too.

I reccomend ED!

I'll throw in an ED vote, although I've never heard the ID subs. I have a 9kV2 and for an 8" sub it's very impressive. I've always ran at least one 10" in the past, and this little sub by itself is enough to make my ears happy. And the box is tiny, 0.3 cu ft, so it'll fit anywhere. I'm sure you'd be happy with either ED or ID though, both get great reviews.

I have not used the ED subs so cannot say much but have heard plenty of good things about them overall.

ID I know quite well, have used at least 15 of the V3's.

IDQ is one of the best all time subs ever, due for an upgrade though to regain it's place very very high in the pecking order, probably won more sq comps than any other sub.

A bit higher in cost, the Arc Audio subs, specifically the Arc series, grandson of one of the best ever I have used alot of them, using them in my own install for some time now. AND, I use what I like, even though I have business ties with them which I am not afraid to say, my ties with them are due to the products, I only use what I want and I am quite picky

This post is in no manner meant to adverstise for anybody, just wanted to share my personal experiences with some very good products.

I have tried one heck of alot of subs over the years, more than 10 in my last comp system alone.

Rick

Image dynamics out of those...without a doubt. I had one of the INfinity subs...for less than 30 days....it got returned.

Bump for weekday readers. Narrowed down to these two options:

The Elemental Design 11Kv.2 at $115 shipped:

http://edesignaudio.com/product.php...&pid=14&cur=USD

or the Image Dynamics ID10 v.3 D4 at $130 shipped:

http://www.cardomain.com/item/IDSID10V3D4

I know it's personal preference, but so far it's just about an even match, with the ID holding a slight edge.

More more more opinions!

Thanks!

the ID will be more efficient down low because it use a larger box, about 50% larger (0,45 vs 0,65 cuft). the 11kv.2 will have better upper end extension. It's pretty much your prirority that will decide. the ID have higher excursion so can handle more power cleanly, but at 300w rms, you're not stressing any of these at all.

If you go ID you might try using the Price Match at Car Domain against here...
http://www.infinitecaraudio.com/cgi-...logno=ID10D4V3

You will have to pay shipping after a price match but you might be able to save five or ten bucks.

Thanks - Car Domain is the only 'authorized' internet reseller, so they probably won't price match.

Sounding meore and more like the Image Dynamics.

Any good place to find enclosure designs? ID's website has specs for sizes, but not blueprints.

What kind of restrictions do you have? A certain minimum on H, W, or D? Throw some info out here and we can whip up some plans. NicEJ25 loves WinISD I think and can give you as much info on total volume as you want. Between that and any constraints I can get you some dimensions.

no real restrictions - just has to fit behind the rear seat in the wagon. Angled so it fits nicely behind the seat and is angled out toward the window. I guess size should be about .5 cu. ft.? ID's website specifies .4 to .8.

yea my friend and I had 2 12" infinity kappa subs in an enclosed box with an alpin 250watt v power amp and the were un believable. we had it on a dB meter and it hit ilke 147 int the back of a 1997 s-10 ext cab. so if i were to have the choice of the subs that ur lookin at i would highly reccomend those. and we also had a pair of tens that hit 138dB in a regular cab s-10

going with a 10" IDv3, I would try 0.6 cuft at first. IMO it's just the right balance between not too high of a Qtc and not too low of a Frc
