Default ECU not making boost ??

Hi guys its been a while...

I had my car tuned by Shiv almost 2 years ago here in Jersey. Everything has been perfect since the tune...

But for the last 6+ months I have had a few boost leaks and little things go on the car. I had the guys from AZP Installs here in NJ take a look at the car this past week because the car wasnt making past 12psi....and I was fairly certain it wasnt the hose's this time. They took a look at it and did a few tests, and the bottom line is they feel the ecu is not sending the proper signals to the solenoid...(i hope I am explaining this correctly) I know they did boost leak tests, they replaced the solenoid with another and still the same thing....They said the turbo looked fine. So my question is...How can an ECUTEK tune go bad ? or how can the ecu stop sending the signals ???

If it definitly is the ECU, how would I go about getting it worked out ? New ECU ? Even at that, how would I get it re-mapped ? Do I have to pay again ?

Sorry for the no0b questions Its been a while since I been on....

Default I hear "replace the ECU, then try to figure out the real problem".....

I hope you get an answer. I hear from a neighbor who's worked on these things that they say "you get down the checklist to where it tells you to replace the ECU and you know you've missed something -- then you replace the ECU -- and then you go try to find out the real problem."

I'm at that point with my '88 GL SPFI 4wd wagon.

valet mode?? where are you getting that from? Did shiv tune and put a valet map on your ECU? I think you're thinking of Cobb's maps. IIRC, ECUtek can store two maps on your ECU, low boost (stock), and high boost (modified or tuned). I believe to switch maps you have to place the throttle in WOT position and press the rear defogger button. I may be thinking of a different EM though . . .been a long weekend.

To tell you the truth it was so long ago and I cant remember, but I coulda sworn that there was a valet mode where it wouldnt boost past 9-12 psi...and since the car checks out fine with no boost leaks, a working solenoid, It keeps pointing towards the ECU. I just dont know what to do next...Should I contact Vishnu directly?

Thanks for all the help so far...

after a reset an ECUTEK with dual boost settings will revert back to map A. On my car map A was the "low" boost setting. Just to be sure, reset the ecu, get out on the highway put it in 5th and floor it and hit the rear defrost button TWICE!. Once won't do it. Drop to a useful gear and let us know how it boosts. This should put it into map B which is the high boost setting.

this is all assuming the ecu is mapped with two boost settings which i'm sure it is.

Just tried that...didnt work.

I dont think the very first ecutek tunes on the 02 models had any option like that...

So Im not sure what to do now...

P.S. I pulled the hose off the wastegate, and oh yes turbo is working, LOL 24+ psi....So its not that either...

How would I be able to tell if its a singnal from the ecu to solenoid not being sent ??

just a quick suggestion.. but.. if for some reason.. you are pinging.. it will slow way off... boost will not go as high at all.. other thing is.. try just reseting... ie take off the neg terminal i think it is.... to reset the ecu.. then check and see what happens..

A less stressfull way to switch boost maps is to simply turn the ignition to the on position w/o starting the car. Then, press the throttle to the floor....while holding it down, press and release the rear defroster button. Let off the gas and start her up....you're now on the other boost map. FWIW, even on custom Shiv ecutek tunes (at least the ones I've seen), the "valet" map is the default map after an ecu reset.

The method described by MikeWRX makes me think you'd end up on the same map you started on (pressing the defroster twice?). I dunno, I always just pushed it once with the method I described above

dunno. my ecu always switched maps with the defrost switching to the OFF position. so if it was off to begin with i'd have to floor the gas->on->off-> let off gas.

My only other suggestions are:

1. to beg/borrow/steal deltadash and try raising your target boost and maximum allowable wastegate duty cycles. This of course assumes your flash allows user tunability.

2. Call Vishnu directly (not as bad as it was back when you were tuned. I usually get a hold of em pretty easily )
