Default ECUTek initial reflash license roll over?

Once an ECU is reflashed with ECUTek does that license saty maried to the ECU or is the license through the tuner who did the reflashing?

Basically could you take an ECUTek reflashed ECU and use it on a car other than the one originally tuned? I realize the ECU will function normally although not optimized for that particular vehicle but will the license remain so tuning can be done without having the pay the initial licensing fee?

TIA

The ECU is licensed.

For example, if you were parting out your 2002-2004 WRX because you were reverting back to stock, you would post "EcuTeK reflashed ECU for sale" and your asking price would be $$$ + a stock ECU.

On a 2005+, the factory immobilizer changes this... you can't simply swap ECUs because your car won't start with a different ECU!

Immobilizer? I'm not sure my 05 has the immobilizer, it is an early 05 (sept 04' build date) Couldnt I swap it for another early 05 ECU?

only 05 STIs have the immobilizer. Swapping ECUs on your car should be fine. The license is in the ECU, however the buyer of the licensed ECU should always check with their tuner first to be sure they are willing to reflash it. in the past ECUTEK dealers couldn't reflash each other's licensed ECUs.

After my initial $$$ to Vishu for the Ecutek reflash, my ECU has been subsequently reflashed (modest fee, but no EcuTek license required) by two other tuners. Note: if you are going to swap ECUs, there are some subtle differences you should look into. Basically run a search on ECU differences. For example, I think there is an extra parameter in the 03+ model year that isn't in the 02 IIRC (though my memory is fuzzy). Also, 4EAT and MT ECU's differ somewhat, in the automatics the ECU has an extra pin for the TCU (the ECU and the TCU talk to each other).

Any EcuTeK dealer can re-reflash an ECU that already has an EcuTeK reflash. The catch is that, using the EcuTeK software, Tuner B can't read the maps in the ECU that Tuner A originally flashed it with.

When you attempt to reflash an ECU that already has an EcuTeK license, the software will report "Reflashing this ECU will not require a license".

So basically tuner B will have to start with their own maps rather than build/alter the existing map?

Yep... unless you can get Tuner A to send over your tune in an e-mail. Some tuners will have no problem with this, while others are a bit more careful about such things.

Well thats good to know. Its nice to have an investment that doesnt loose 100% of its value once used.
