Default Used WRX's? Bad roads?

I'm thinking of picking up a line of credit when I get out of school next summer, saving up some cash and dropping it on a 2002/03 WRX. I live in Saskatchewan, any way I cut it it's 6 months of winter. Subaru's have long been on my short list for great daily drivers, I get jealous every time I see one on four michelin snow tires during the cold season...

I stopped by the local Subaru dealer on Friday and the guy there said that cars of that vintage are tough to come by, and go for around $25k plus taxes w/around 60-80k Kilometers. I'm looking at spending around $25k tax in. The guy mentioned that cars w/higher miles go for as low as 18k. If anyone here has purchased a car of similar vintage I'm wondering what it cost and how you came across it. There were about two cars nationwide on canadatrader that fit my specifications, ie: stock, clean, around 80k. $26,000 for one in Calgary.

As well, I'm wondering how these cars fare on horrible roads. In Saskatoon where I live the pavement is deteriorating faster than the crime rates are rising, so I need a car that can take a lot of abuse and won't directly deliver the punishment to my spine like my '86 Mustang does now.

TIA for any advice/tips/what have you.

Man...WRXs are designed for rallies. They can take a major beating, plus you have the best chance of getting out of a hole/snow ditch/etc. with this car.

I strongly suggest you buy private. Dealers are pigs. If they buy it in trade for $15,000 you can be sure to see a $24,000 asking price on the car the next day.

And find a no-interest loan. lol. There are a few Muslim companies around who offer it. The deal is that they buy the car first for the asking price (let's say $17,000) and charge you $19,000 (which is WAY less than what the interest would be in the end), and you pay usually over 24 months.

Anyways, that's all I have to offer. Go to Alberta and get it there: less tax. The dirtbags who run Ontario charge 15% tax. I miss Calgary.

lol, I wish I could avoid the taxes. In Saskatchewan you have to pay both GST and PST on used cars at dealerships, and when I buy a car in AB I have to pay GST on it anyway. I bet if I bought at a dealer in AB I'd have to pay PST to register it here.

Oh well. It's a while before I can start seriously looking.

If you buy a used car in alberta on a private sale you dont pay GST.

I bought my wrx used, its a 2002 and I bought it when it was exactly 1 year old. I picked it up for 30 g's from a dude in BC (abbotsford) and it only had 15 000kms on it. It was like brand new, the passenger seat had only been sat in a few times by his wife and the backseat and trunk had never been used. He bought it, and as soon as he found out hte STI was coming to canada he stopped driving it every day and only took it out for drives on the weekends. He didnt want to mile it out or damage it to sell it so he could upgrade. So his loss was my gain.

So keep looking and good deals are out there.

Well, I hope you're right it's just that knowing Sask I'd have to pay GST on a car I bought over there before I could register it here. I'll have to find out.

Nice find with your car, I'd hope to find something almost as good.

I don't think you'll have to pay PST when you bring it back across the border. There are some hassles with the registration, but it shouldn't amount to much.

We got our 2002 for $26k with 60,000 km on it about 18 months ago. My wife was all over the sales guy - she made him pull the original receipts from the trade-in along with every service record they had on it. The alternator died less than 48 hours after we bought it, but the dealer replaced it for free. Since then we've put on 30k without any issues at all.

ya you will when you go to register the car. When I was buying mine in BC if I wanted to put full registration on it (at the BC office) I would have had to pay the sales tax but when I got home I could have claimed it back.....but it would have taken a while. So she just gave me temp registration just to get it back to alberta so avoid paying that.

come to ontario..... lots cheaper! 02's are 18-21k, 03's are 20-23k and even 04's are mid-20's....

A few of my local dealers had a few WRX left from 2004..... they sold the last few only this February with $8k off list price...... Sure, you couldn't pick the colour.... but $27k plus taxes for a new wrx? not much to complain about.

Check trader.ca
