Default POLL: 04-05 WRX AP stalling with new firmware

As the title suggests, I'd like to conduct a poll to look into the AP stalling issues people are having with the new firmware upgrade. So, if you are an 04-05 WRX owner who has upgraded your AP firmware and are running the latest maps, please vote!

Hopefully, this can shed some light for those who have yet to flash the latest maps (especially if you own an '04 such as myself)

- Tom

EDIT: Ok, I've noticed that this thread has been bumped up again for absolutly no reason.

Cobb has released specific 2004 & 2005 maps, as well as firmware reflashes for those who had '05 firmware running on their '04 ecu to fix any issues that users had.

Oh yeah, I forgot to add the option of not upgrading your AP to the poll. Thus, if you have yet to upgrade, please do NOT vote!

I was one of the unfortunate ones who jumped right on the updated versions ... And I got the stalling issue initially ... No stalling with the latest rev maps though ... Been about three-four weeks or so now ...

I would recommend NOT to flash to the latest maps. They offer no advantage except for the change ECU identifier and the CL/OL fix. The CL/OL fix is a big deal and worthy of an upgrade, but I would recommend using the pre 1.21 beta map (with the CL/OL delay fix) rather than the new AP firmware upgrade maps (stage 2 1.21 and after).

Part of the reason for the upgrades was a shift to using the 05 firmware as the base of all the AP firmwares. It is something in that firmware that is causing the stalling issues and the increase in afterfires that some are experiencing. Some that are having the problem are even having it after unmarrying the AP. This is because when you unmarry the AP after the update, it puts the MY05 map on the ECU, not the MY04 map.

Hold off, use the beta OL/CL map until Cobb either switches back to the MY04 base maps for the 04s, or figures out what in the MY05 firmware is causing issues with 04 WRXes.

I was worried about upgrading to 1.6v map manager.

I did not send my AP to Cobb to do. I did the upgrade myself.

Have an 04 1.19 was running great but I waited about 4-months and read about alot of the problems people were having which worried me more.

I did the whole upgrade without any problems and loaded 1.22 as it was the new map out at the time.

Car runs great, much smoother than 1.19.

Not sure why one ECU would flash differently than another but MY04 was fine. Never stalled , not once sooo........

What does that mean?

Also, please DO NOT vote if you have an AUTOMATIC transmission. This issue seems to only affect those with manuals.

Yeah, sorry if my post sounded like it was directed towards you. I just meant to avoid messing up the poll results by having future voters only vote if they have manual transmissions. Glad that you don't have any probs! I can only wish I was so lucky...

My 04 still stalls and I'm really disappointed that this issue has not yet been resolved. It's only a matter of time till someone gets hurt because their car stalled. Cobb needs to either let us revert back to the original firmaware, or offer an 04 specific update immediately. This should be their primary concern since safety is an issue here.

Potential Scenario: pulling into a parking spot and your car stalls and you cream into the car in the next parking spot.

The stalls happen so suddenly, that you may not be able to react to the lack of power steering and braking. I can't imagine how scary a stall would be for those of you in snow/icy regions.

Also, everytime I shift over 4k rpms I get an afterfire! Everytime!!!

The only reason I haven't sold my AP yet is I'm hoping protuner (if we ever get it in So Cal) can fix these issues. My faith in Cobb is completely gone at this point. Another form of engine management is becoming much more attractive. If I didn't have an 04, I would unmarry my AP right away, and run stock EM on TBE, UP etc.

BTW, my ecu is AH791, and I've never ran any kind of MBC, or BOV. I have a 3" TBE with hiflo cat, catless uppipe and IC hose.

What kind of similarities are there with the affected cars besides 04 and manual transmissions?

I haven't had many problems with the new map either; I've only stalled twice. But some have stalled much more often. I've also had some afterfires periodically between shifts (i shouldnt be getting these with a cat). There was also a few others on wrxforum.com that mention extra afterfires with stage2 running w cats.

At any rate, if you're not having any major problems, don't worry about it too much, but be aware that you might stall unexpectedly. Keep an eye on the tach when slowing down/stopping.

Hopefully they either fix the issue or put out some my04 based maps soon.

Seems to me that only 04 would have stalling problem? I've read from somewhere that 05 won't have the stalling problem because the map is based on 05's, is that right??

Thanks

Yeah, I've been running the stg2 beta map for about the last month. I created this poll to help gather information regarding this issue.

How many people are using 1.21 still?

I'm on 1.22 and now there is a 1.23, so has anyone tried them which are having the stalling problem?

Where is there a version 1.23?
I don't see it on Cobb's website.

I just bought my AP yesterday and flashed the Stg. 2, 91 Oct, V1.22 map onto the ECU. I noticed on the website that it is also the newest version of that map.

Is that the map you folks are having problems with? I want to know so that I can watch out for stalling issues.

Yup. Stg2 maps with revisions 1.21 or higher are the ones causing people problems.

Ouch, well, I'd better be carefull then. I must say since yesterday I've been very pleased with the power increase. Each time I drive the thing, it seems to get faster.

It looks like they're working on it (Trey) so how is that new map working for you guys? Any problems yet?

I'm installing the new firmware right now. I ran into a small SNAFU when I tried to get the PC to communicate with the AccessPORT but a quick call to Cobb fixed the issue. I talked to Parker and he helped me identify the issue and all was well. I know that Cobb has some what of a bad rap but I would just try calling them instead of using a post or email because it was so much faster over the phone. I'll drive the car around for a couple of weeks and then I'll come back and post my results. BTW I'll be running on the crapy of crapy gas that Cali can offer so I'm not sure if this will have an effect.

Later Tom

edit: he drives a 2005wrx

I have the ground mod made buy Sun Auto...got it for free! It's hook up the way that they had it done on one of their pictures so it's not wired up like the way Davenow has his. I'm not sure if my wires are long enough to do his setup but I'm thinking that I'm going to have to go to a stereo shop latter this week and make some more ground wires and try Davenow's method out.
