Default Might be moving to Florida for a while....

Backstory:

My GF got divorced from her husband and moved to MD from Fl 5 years ago. She still has a daughter living with her Dad there. GF always wanted to live in Fl during her Daughters last year of HS...that brings us to now.

So, I'm thinking of quitting my job and moving down there with her for the school year. It would mean quitting my job and all and finding something down there and then coming back to MD to get a new job.

The house I live in belongs to the GF and she's making arrangements to pay off the house and all for the year or so we'd be gone.

I've got a 15 year career with my company, but honestly, I'm at the end of moving up. As anyone can tell from the number of my posts on here, I aint doing much anyhow and have been thinking about a change.

My other option would be to stay here and travel down to see the GF every month or so to keep up with the house and all....

I haven't posted anything of any real worth before...so why start now, right?

OT's thoughts.

And no TTIWWOP's of the daughter!!

It would be the Punta Gorda/Port Charlotte area...yeah, the area that got nailed by Charley last year.

As for job, I'm trying to see if my company has any openings in the area...if not, I guess I could pick oranges or lay carpet for the time being.

Hint: roofers are getting top dollar as there are thousands of houses still waiting for new roofs from last years 'canes. It's kind of funny becaue places like Taco Bell are having a hard time finding workers because everybody wants the $$ from 'cane resortation work.

You'll be way too qualified to work at Taco Bell...I know people who live in the Punta Gorda area, they say it is a beautiful place to live when their are no hurricanes...good luck with the job thing, the job market in Fl. is not desirable to say the least...

Nice, quiet, pastoral, OLD, and SLOW. Very few professional jobs. Lots of jobs in the bldg trades, as others have mentioned. Service industry stuff too, though I'd bet in line with your experience the only stuff would be hotel mgmt. Come to think of it, facility mgr. for a hotel / resort would probably be a decent gig over there. If you're gonna buy real estate, buy ASAFP, the market is still skyrocketing over there.

The sad part is the insurance company's are denying the majority of the claims without even going to look at the damage.

Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte, Ft. Myers, Sarasota are full of old people seven months out of the year. The healthcare industry is booming in Southwest Florida with all the old people down there.

I hadn't thought about hotel management....great Idea!

This will only be a temporary deal as we'll be moving back to MD once the school year is finished.

I lived with my Dad in Boca Raton, Fl for a while years ago and while Fl is nice, I still like the changes of the seasons and the snow of the North. I grew up just outside of Buffalo, NY so I guess that's why.

Thanks for the feedback guys, this helps alot!

I have family in Port Charlotte... not a bad place to be... if you like the elderly, the rich, and the ricers. And good weather The humidity will be good for the dog's health.

I'm buying you a beer before you go, though.

Well if Andrea ever gets her ass up here that's a deal!

That's where we stayed a couple of weeks ago, in Deep Creek area. Lots of old people and strip malls...kind of like Frederick used to be 15 years ago. Little spots of civilization with a whole lot of nothin' in between.

The GF is trying to find an apartment that will take med-sized dogs now....Maybe I should tell my work what I'm thinking.
