Default Mileage on rebiuld engine

when buying a used car, does the dealer have to keep the odometer with original miles (klicks) if the car has a rebuild engine in it?

I'm looking at a 1985 Lebaron and it says 13002 KM with a rebuild engine. can they do this or is it considered rolling back the odometer?

The odometer will still read correct for whatever milage the car has from new. The dealership knows when the car had the rebuilt engine as is just stating how many miles on the rebuilt. So if the car has 200,000 k on it and 13002 KM on the engine. The odo will read 200,000 but the engine was repaces at 186,998.

If the odo was changed as in the whole guage with the rebuilt engine and reads the mileage of the rebuild the dealership then has the responsibility of providing you with the mileage, pre-rebuild, as well as providing documentation of the rebuild.

after looking around I did find this:

http://www.canlii.ca/eliisa/highligh...query=odometer

Odometer alteration
42(1) No person shall alter the reading of an odometer of any motor
vehicle unless it is necessary for mechanical repairs or replacement of the
unit.

(2) If any repairs or replacement of an odometer unit have taken place
resulting in a change of the odometer reading, the seller of the motor
vehicle must advise the purchaser in writing of the change.
