4th brake light.
well i just got a spoiler because apparantly L sedans dont deserve them. i got it off a legacy 98ish. i was wondering about the brake light on the spoiler itself. i have a 3rd brake light in the car right in front of the rear window. i have located the hookup to that light.
should i: 1. leave the light plugged in just like it is now and dont plug in the light on the spoiler 2. unplug the stock light and use the spoiler light 3. use both (see below) how could i go about splicing the wires off the harness to plug in both lights? oh yah which of these is illegal? i live in california so most things are, im just checking.

I think there might be a wire in teh trunk for the spoiler..look for something on the driver side, but, not too sure...I think it might attach to the dome light

I vote for splicing it in. There's gonna be nothing about too much light for brake lights, but if the spoiler is obstructing your stock light that could be bad.

Ok, basically, you'll find 2 wires coming off of the stock light, you need to tap them (Here's an easy solution.. http://www.radioshack.com/product.as...t%5Fid=64-3052) Then just run them to the trunk, and splice (again, use the radio shack parts above, or something like them unless you like soldering) that into your wing wiring. |

ok cool. the harness is already in the trunk so it should be very easy to do. i just dont trust myself at all with electricity. so just to confirm....i would need 2 of the 1->2 thingies from radio shack?

Is the brake light in that spoiler illuminated with standard filiment style bulbs or with LEDs. If it's LEDs there is a polarity. It's still two wires, it just won't work one way. If that happen, reverse the taps.
That style connector, by the way, works, but it has about the worst failure rate of anything like it. This kind, with a very similar design, is infinitely better. found here http://www.partsexpress.com/webpage....ctGroup_ID=403 It clamps around the wire too, then the wire you want to splice to it plugs in with a shielded male spade connector. found here: http://www.partsexpress.com/webpage....12853&desc=ASC and ooks like this Good crimpers for a solid connection make a lot of difference too. http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=360-620 |

oooo very informative post. thank you. the spoiler lights are LED. could I just strip some of the insulation off the existing wires, take some other wires and attempt to splice them in? or is this a recipe for disaster?

It'll work. If you just want a twist connection, try to 'weave' the wires togther and get electrical tape wrapped individually and tightly on each wire. (With clean hands) Then around both. Secure the new wire along it's route. Popping a brakelight fuse isn't safe. Stagger the areas you strip so when a couple of summers pass and the stickum melts, they have less chance of contacting.
As I often recommend, try to find a privately owned car stereo shop nearby that'll hook that up for you. You could probably get away with handing an installer 5 or 10 bucks if you've already installed everything and run the wires. He'll splice it the right way. I say privately because the Circuit Cities and Best Buy places, a: probably aren't allowed to do that, b: don't hire good installers (not true across the board I know but trust me. "Certified" installers are wishy washy at best.) |

ok ill probably end up doing that. (just because i dont want to pay for anything)
but what about the 3rd brake light laws? what is legal / illegal? because if its legal to just not hook up the light in the car i wont go through all that trouble. |

If you remove all trace of the rear window brake light, you'll pass inspection in any state I've ever known about. The rules I've seen are: If it is on the car it has to work. If you have a 3rd brake light on the trunk, and it works, they'll be fine with that. If you still have the one in the rear window, it'll have to light up to pass. So pull it out and make sure it doesn't look like one was ever there. An inspector could be a jerk about it if he knows it's been altered and wants to pull your chain. Most won't know the difference. Even if they drive the same car as you, just say it was a factory option on yours.
