Default 98 legacy gt options

If I wanted to do an 05 legacy gt or ver8 sti engine swap into a 98 legacy gt (auto), what would my options be in terms of trannies? How much would I be looking at to spend on all the necessary parts (I will do the work myself so don't include labor)? Thanks for any input!

So the ver8 sti swap will work? The stock GT auto tranny wont work with it will it? What tranny should be used with the sti ver8 swap?

So the sti engines will bolt up to a stock 98 legacy GT automatic transmission, but it wont be a very reliable setup will it? The stock 98 legacy GT automatic tranny is designed to handle the 165hp legacy engine, not the swapped in 280-300hp put out by the sti engines. So the stock 98 legacy GT automatic tranny wont last long mated to an sti engine will it?

I have been searching this EXACT scenario ('98 2.5 GT w/4EAT)for a while. Most members said that the 4EAT could actually handle the additional HP, some even saying it was a stronger tranny than the 5MT (could handle more HP/TQ). There are also several mods to improve the auto capabilities and make it a more efficient performer.(Search Level10, you'll find good and bad but you get that with anything). From what I understand the problem with the STI swap is the fact that if you do a direct STI swap to any of the autos, you would have to swap the STI's computer to make it work properly. Only problem with that is the thing is designed ONLY for the STI manual trans. That's why I have been back to the drawing board, considering many of the newer 2.5T from the '04 Forester's/Baja's and new Legs, souring everything from an automatic vehicle. Or save the cash and time for the radical hybrid swap and do the AVO kit and hope for the best.

you would need a new gen jdm impreza auto ecu (avcs+auto) then have it tuned to work with the engine

other wise not really a proublem

So instead of using the sti ecu, I would use a new gen jdm impreza auto ecu (avcs+auto). What model years are the new gen jdm impreza auto ecu (avcs+auto)? How would I get this ecu tuned to work with the sti engine and the '98 2.5 GT's 4EAT tranny?

2001- current
it would need to be ecuteked
then use the 98gt tcu should be close enough to work

it would be considerably cheeper to get a usdm wrx auto clip and add injectors+a vf39 for simmilar power

I have a 98 Legacy LGT auto which I swapped in an 05’ WRX drivetrain… Ditch that crap 4EAT all together and drop in a 5MT or 6MT and be done with it

My dream would be to swap in the USDM sti engine with 6spd manual, but what would I be looking at for necessary parts there?
I would need the engine and tranny themselves (obviously), and what else?

1. sti rear diff?
2. different driveshaft?
3. manual tranny's brake and clutch pedal assembly?
4. different exhaust?
5. what ecu?
6. what other stock legacy GT parts would I need to replace because they may not be able to support the sti engine/drivetrain (radiator, fuel pump, engine/tranny mounts etc.)?
7.any other parts I might need?

(Sorry for the seemingly endless amounts of questions I have, but this is after all, a complicated procedure. I just want to make sure I know every single part that I will need so that I can do the swap the right way. Hopefully, with everyone's help, I can compose a list of all the parts I will need. Thanks for all of your responses so far, and thank you in advance for further responses!!! )

Well considering that I have no experience with mechanics, that part might be a challenge for me, but I love to fiddle with electronics and stuff, so wiring wont be too bad.

However, that being said, I am unsure of what parts I would need to complete the USDM sti/6spd tranny swap properly. Correct me if Im wrong, but Im pretty sure I would need:

1. the usdm sti engine (duh)
2. the 6spd tranny (with or without DCCD?)
3. sti rear diff
4. different driveshaft
5. manual tranny's brake and clutch pedal assembly
6. different exhaust

Should I use the usdm sti ecu? Would I need to replace any stock 98 legacy GT parts because they may not be able to support the sti engine/drivetrain (radiator fans, fuel pump, engine/tranny mounts etc.)?
Are there any other parts I might need? Im trying to compose a complete list of all the parts I will need.

Man you need to do A LOT more searching on the subject to help your decision. If you’re considering a 6MT you’ll need sti axle-shafts, outer uprights, wheel-bearings, etc, etc. Not to mention an STI ECU and wiring harness for the USDM motor (good luck finding that one) and about 10k for all the parts to install in a 6k dollar car

You’re better off with a JDM v6, 7, 8 setup. Do some more searching to help your research.

Good luck…

Okay well in that case nevermind the 6MT. I will just have to mate the either the 2.5L USDM sti engine or the 2.5L ver8 sti engine to a 5MT. (There are sources out there that are selling both the 2.5L USDM sti engine and the 2.5L ver8 sti engine complete with ECUs and wiring looms.) But which 5MT would be strong enough to handle 300hp? Also, with a 5MT, what other drivetrain parts would I need to make that setup work on a 98 legacy GT?

I have a ver8 swap into my '99 LGT. We are running the ver8 through the stock Legacy gearbox with a ver6 gearset and uprated diffs because it's a rally car. We've done two rallies with it and are having zero problems.
I am still running the stock JDM ecu with AVCS.
Contact wrx_driver_2002 on this board as their shop did the swap. You can also PM me for more information. Hope that helps.
