Question Baja Alternator Questions

I was wondering if anyone knew of a bolt in replacement for the stock alternator that puts out more amps, i know the stock one puts out ~90 amps or so. I am looking for something in the 120-150 amp range to power some amps and an inverter and a DC-DC powersupply for a Mac Mini. Would it be better to just get a second battery? i dont know how that setup would work (charging the second battery from the alternator) and if that would put less stress on the alternator. Any suggestions/comments oh Wise Ones???

I'm not a wise one but I went thru this with my F150 a few years back. I ended up getting a 120amp alternator from Napa. Technically your alternator should keep up with what you want it to do. I've done a few (hundreds, maybe thousands) charging system tests on various cars. If everything is working correctly and everything added on is wired correctly you should be able to handle a very large amplifier, heater/AC, headlights, and defrost (the biggy amp drawer) with a 90 amp alternator with plenty of amperage to spare for your miniMac. But, as we all know you'll notice things get dim or the stereo will weaken or other goofy things happening when you are driving at night with the wipers on and the AC on. Everytime that AC compressor kicks on to cycle the strange things will start to happen.

My 1st suggestion is to install your stuff piece by peice and give it a few days after each install and see if you're getting close to maximum capacity. You may never have a problem. You might have noticeable issues. If you go with a higher amperage alt make sure it has a good warranty, my 120amp alt in the Ford lasted 4 months the first time, 16 months( still going I think) the second time. Sometimes Napa's stuff is worthy, sometimes you want to choke the guy at the counter.

2nd suggestion is to get a really good battery. I've noticed my Baja lights dim intermittantly and I believe its because the SUbaru battery is not so strong. The system charges very well, but the battery just seems weak occassionally. We brought it to the dealer and of course they couldn't duplicate our complaint (duh, its daytime) and they said if its starts and stays running we are SOL reguarding the dimming lights. Subaru has never had good batteries in their cars. Someday I'll be getting an Optima or something.

Thanks for the info chris, much appreciated. Do you know of any alternators specifically that would fit the baja?

Talking Ah! The imfamous hunt for things that fit Bajas.

Call around to the part stores. Ask them if they list anything for the Baja. They might. Legacy alternators will work too. Maybe the parts guy at your dealer can help with cross referencing. Ask him/her about the 3.0L Limited alt. The 3.0Ls have honkin stereos and lots of extras so there is a chance that alt might be higher amperage. We're getting into the unknown.

new 06 Forester XT is supposed to have a 110A alternator. If thats true I wouldn't be suprised if it bolts right up.

On my Toyota I was able to purchase a Powermaster Alternator. 170 AMP unit, but the killer was that it cost a ton! I want to say it ran over $300, but I am not positive. It was purchased through summit racing. If Powermaster doesnt do aftermarket units for Scoobys, there must be someone that does?
