alternator recommendation?
So sometime in the past couple days my alternator completely kicked the bucket, and I found myself without sufficient juice in my battery to get from point b to back home. After a jumpstart, I was able to get back to the house, but now I'm needing to get a replacement to install. I realize there've been numerous posts about higher output alternators, but what I'm looking for is a recommendation between my local options. Remanufactured units at some of the local parts chains are approximately the same price, but I've noticed that Napa sells a 110 amp unit wheras most other places sell an 85 amp unit. Is there any reason why I would want to go with an 85 amp alt. vs the 110?
Thanks, 'shonk

Is there a reason why you are replacing the whole thing instead of just the brushes or the regulator? Are the bearings gone, too?

dunno. I had the charging system checked by Les Schwabs, after staring at the battery light on my dash for a week or so. They suggested a replacement, which I politely declined at the time, as I figured they'd gouge me on the part, and charge labor for something I might as well do myself to save a bill or two. I'm not really sure how to check what specifically was failing about the alternator, so I figured without having any alternator knowledge, I'd just trade it in for the reman unit and pay the difference.
any better ideas? |

Normally when i changed the alternator, i did the whole thing...i didnt open it up and swap internal parts...might want to check autozone or advanced auto for lifetime warrentied alternators...

See if you can just get a new regulator and a brush kit for it. If so, you'll save a lot of money.

how much work is involved in changing out the brushes and regulator? I don't have too much work space as I'm visiting my father in law, and I don't want to take over his garage for too long if I can avoid it. The other advantage I'm looking at is the lifetime warranty if I get the napa alternator. Thanks for your consideration thus far!

to me it is not worth the time and hassle to try and fiddle with the brushes, but that is just me...it is pretty easy to just take out the old alternator and throw in the new one...
but then again im kinda lazy...i usually order the whole assembly and put it in to save me time and aggrivation...like when i replaced my LCA's on my crx, i just ordered the lca instead of 4 new bushings to get pressed... |

so any suggestions on the 110 vs the 85? will 110 be enough to require a new line to the battery?

well, I went ahead and just got the 110 amp unit at NAPA, and the install went quickly and painlessly (sans a scratch on the knuckle and a pinch between the power steering pulley and my socket wrench...) The leggy's back on the road and running on regular voltage now. Thanks for reading and contributing folks.
