Default CAI's and ECUTek - specific question w/o stirring trouble :)

If you *already* have a CAI and the ECUTek tuner says 'don't worry about it, we can tune for it' - do you trust that?

I guess what I'm not *clearly* finding in my searches is this (I'm finding plenty of debate and plenty abt. CAI's in non-tuned/stock motors): Is an engine with a CAI and professionally tuned for a CAI 'better' than an engine with a stock airbox and tuned for a stock airbox?

I have never found a CAI that offers any improvement over the stock box with a simple drop in filter. At least up to 350whp. You are always better off with the stock box unless you are going to a rotated or large bolt on turbo. If you like the sound and the look then run the intake. Just make sure you tell the tuner what intake you have exactly so they can map for that. Most intakes cause a miscalibration to the MAF sensor causing increased timing and a lean condition. Some are better then others.

Thanks- yes, I felt my question was 'backwards', if I've already got a CAI and it can be tuned for it, and even if it only works 'as well as' the stock - then why bother purchasing a stock unit and swapping.

However, I wasn't thinking of the noise. I bet the stock set-up is a bit quieter than the CAI. I think I'm going back to stock...

Heck, I don't care about the look, it's under the hood so it's not like I have to look at it

(I had to laugh at my Perrin uppipe - beautiful shiny polished pipe, with big 'Perrin' letters on it, very attractive. Installed, I'd have to crawl under the car to even see it.)
