Angry 1998 Forester Door Panels

I am needing to install my speaker components and crossovers in the front and rear doors. I have a 1998 Forrester S (US) and I can't seem to figure out how to remove the panels (I really only need the upper panels removed, the brown ones in my case and beige being the lower panels). I know there's a large screw near the top and front, and two screws inside the "ash tray/secret compartment" near the back of the door. Removing those screws just makes the door looser, but doesn't release the panel. I'm afraid to pull/yank on the panel for fear of breaking something. Does anyone have any insight as to the removal of door panels? Thanks!
