Smile UTEC Tuning with Tuner Pro

Hi,

If usin above for tuning, the Knock sensor that come with
the tuner pro will be installed with close proximity to the
stock knock sensor (as instruction from the installaltion Guide).

Questions
a. the data logger from UTEC will be using this tuner pro
knock reading or it will be logging using the stock knock
sensor, any difference between the two knock sensor readings?

b. For the power for the tuner pro, do you use the cigarette lighter
power source or any other place recommeded?

c. Do we need the tuner pro or the tuner will do?
The difference between the two , is that the tuner pro
you can listen to the knock via headphones.

d. is the knock readings real time on the UTEC software?
so when tuning on the move, we can see the knock
on the screen?

Thks

Cheers

A) I think the knock detection in the log(logger number 1) will be from the utec which is using the stock sensor.
B) The tuner is supposed to get its own power source. This basically means taking a wire and puting it from the battery to the tuner. I would personally use a relay with the ignition power turning the relay on. You can get the ignition power from under the stock clock on the dash.
C) I think there are also extra outputs and inputs on the tuner pro(I forget). If you're not planning on using the headphones to detect knock or the extra outputs/inputs, the tuner would save you some dough.
D) The knock detection with the utec is basically realtime. You will not only see it in a log, but the cel will flash twice when the utec detects a knock. The utec has many knock detection settings, and the headphones on the tuner pro may help you set them in a better way(then default settings)......

==> If use the power source from cigarette lighter, is it ok?

With the headphones, am I right to say that,
the louder the knock, the problem is more severe?

===> If the someone is driving, and with realtime knock
on the notebook, is that enough?

How much better with knock detection via headphones?

B) Some people do that, but the txs tuner manual basically says not to.

D) I wouldn't know about the loudness of a knock, they're kinda hard to hear in the first place. If I hear a knock and the utec detects a knock, I lower the sensitivity of the utecs knock detection in that rpm range a little. If I hear a knock and the utec doesn't detect one, I raise the sensitivity of the utecs knock detection in that rpm range a little. If I don't hear a knock and the utec detects one, I lower the utecs knock detection sensitivity in that rpm range. The point of using the headphones is to get the utec knock detection tuned well enough so that you know that there really is a knock when the cel flashes because the utec is detecting knock, and when the cel doesn't flash, you know there isn't a knock(at least that's the way I see it). If you're happy with the default settings of the utecs knock detection sensitivity, and/or you don't plan on tuning it, you don't need the headphones.

Hi Hippy,

a. in your opinion, tuning with the tuner is enough or
do we really need a tuner pro?

b. The price for the Tuner is $479 and Tuner pro is $699
and what do you use to tuner your utec?

Thks again.

a) It depends on what you're trying to tune. If the fuel map is all you're trying to tune with the wbo2 unit, then you obviously don't need the tuner pro. If you wanna tune utecs knock detection sensitivity settings, then the tuner pro might be for you. Many if not most people do fine without messin with the default knock sensitivity settings. Most proffecional tuners never take the time to change those when they tune a wrx with a utec(cause it takes a while).....

b) I have the old tuner which was made before there were multiple txs wbo2 units. It's now called the tuner pro. If I had a choice, I'd still get the tuner pro. If I for some reason didn't wanna pay the $700 price, I'd probably get the tuner which has the cheaper sensor. This is just cause I'd know that if the sensor broke, I'd probably replace it with the cheaper sensor anyways(as I even did with my unit, even tough it came with the more expensive sensor. I mean it's crazy to me to pay 4 times more for one sensor then another....).

Hi Hippy,

The tuner come with choice of Bosch LSU. 4 Wideband O2 Sensor
or VW Sensor

The price is $479 with the Bosch LSU. 4 Wideband O2 Sensor.

Do you know the price of the tuner knock sensor with harshness,
as I need to buy another set.
This is because sharing the tuner pro with a friend to save cost.

Cheers

I don't know about the knock sensor and harness, but from what I remember it's made by bosche. It really couldn't cost to much. The vw wbo2 sensor is also a bosch lsu4 sensor, it just costs less then the other one. I called up bosche once and they told me that the more expensive sensor is the same one that comes in certain versions of the catilac caterra..... People say that the more expensive sensor responds faster to changes in a/f ratio, but I haven't noticed a difference since I switched to the vw sensor. The tech support people at bosche whom I talked to didn't seem to know the difference either(they just said that they were both lsu4 sensors)........
