Default Some baja ?s

Although not new to Subaru, I am new to my Baja, up to 2,800 miles now.

The longer I drive it the more things I notice with it, and I am curious if they are normal or flaws with my vehicle.

1. Rear wheel well, where the rear bumer wraps into the wheel well merging with the inner fender liner. Where the Accent line in the bumper is, it does not sit flush in the wheel well, looks slightly bulged almost as if there is a clip or something missing. Is it like this on all Bajas?

2. metal VIN plate under hood on drivers side. Mine is bowed up and although it is rivited in place, it is loose. Is anyone elses like this? I dont want sand/salt to get under it and scratch or rust the fender.

3. Oil consumption. Just curious to see what people have seen. i have 2800 total miles. After the past 1,700 miles I have seen about 1/2 quart consumption.

just looking to see what others have observed. Thanks for any input.

Subaru Banner Oil consumption

Hi Hawk,
Yes I noticed a small use of engine oil in my Baja Turbo during the first
3000-4000 miles. About a half a quart. Now I have no oil consumption at all.
But I still check the oil about twice a month. Greg.

Check the oil everyweek, specially if you have a turbo engine.... dont want to let it drop. Heck BMW tell you in the dash check the oil regularly since they burn it so quickly, NO JOKE. Oil comsuption is normal in some engines specially some moderns ones.

I checked the oil this weekend, about 1/2 quart low - with about 2500 miles on this oil change -- 5000 on the Baja. I'll do a 2nd oil analysis to see if the numbers improve. I posted my first report in the maintenance forum.

Most "Jiffy Lube" type places do not replace the oil drain plug gasket as required by Subaru. It is a small $0.10 part that looks like a washer. It should not be reused. If it is reused, you will have leaks.

You can in most cases get away with several oil changes after the crush washer has been crushed. Sure its not by the book, and if you re-use it you have to torque it alittle tighter beyond spec but it wont leak if you just snug it up alittle. Of course the proper way to do it is to replace the crush washer each time..Besides those Jiffy Lube guys almost always over tighten the drain plug.

The oil loss I have noticed was not leaked, it was consumed or magically disappeared.

moral of the story- try to scam your dealer into giving you a handful of crushwashers for free! (or something like that)

<-- Heads outside to check the oil level. Thanks for reminding me this is a turbo.

Tomorrow I'll have 1750 miles on the Baja. Two and a half weeks of ownership!
