Default vortex valve no more!

Okay,

As of right now, no more vortex valve until further notice! It has been removed.

I am sure many of you are dying to know why, so here is why. I almost get flattened tonight because of that thing!

Using it on an NA Baja there is only one place for it you go, that is right in the opeing in the throttle body, directly in front of the throttle valve. Well, guess what happened tonight?

I was out doing an induction experiment, so I was test driving and stomped on the gas (purely for research!). It was great accept for on thing - the car would not slow down! I was redlining, coming up on an intersection! This sucks. I had to use both feet on the brake to get it to stop at the light, then I had to sit there as wait for it to change! Drove through the intersection with the enging screaming and pulled over. Shut off engine and realize the throttle valve was stuck open. On what you ask? On the vortex valve that had migrated right into the butterfly valve.! Nice!

Yanked it out and drove home fuming. (Yes, the car was slower without it, but not becausse of the WOT!

So, until I can figure out how to secure it in place - no more Vortex Valve!

Live, learn, die trying!

Perry

Sorry to hear about what had happened to you.
Man , do not put that thing back in. It's not worth the aggrevassion that it will cause you. You're lucky not to have any vehicle/pedestrian in front of you.

That's part of tuning trial and error, to find out what works and not.

I have an NA Baja, so the airbox and filter are mounted right in front of the throttle body. The only place to put the thing, and have it do anything, is in the white plastic air horn that mated to the throttle body. It is very smooth and so the friction from the valve was not enough to hold it in place. It slipped down into the butterfly valve where it got stuck.

The only thing to do is to use a screw or two to hold it in place. If you have a CAI this would not be a problem.

Anyone have an airbox to sell?

Perry

Leave it on, get in an accident, and then sue! It's the American way.

I will make a call about it, but isn't that mounted on the fender? Mine is on the engine at the TB intake.

Perry

(I see you might be in the neighbor hood too! Cool.)

ah yes, it is mounted on the fender, so i guess it wouldnt work for you unless you wanted to mod it... but if you do, its here in my closet, practically brand new (like 450 miles on it) and i stay in norfolk...

Hey Perry, you should be able to get a cheapy cold air intake for $20.00. My brother got me one for my birthday last year. I think it was for a n/a Impreza, if I remember correctly. Quality, made in China. Looks neat, and my Baja sounds like a motorcycle when you hammer the throttle hard. Mike

Way ahead of you...I just made one out of PVC. Very industrial looking I must say. I tried 2 inch pipe then redid it with three inch to get a little more air reservoir.

I think I can feel the difference in the two. Both sound fine, not even very noticable, and I made both of them for under 40 bucks! ;-)

I just need to find a 3" grommet for the fender opening and I will be all set.
