Default options for a 2001 rs

ok, im thinking about doing a wrx (ej20) swap in my rs, what are my options? i dont really want to change the tranny, and id like to keep it as simple as possible. does anyone have any estimated prices on what ill be spending on the complete engine w/ecu and wiring harness? and is it worth doing the wiring myself? i read in a couple places that its kinda a mess, anyone know what that will cost if i had it done by someone (estimated)? thanks, kyle

Been doing a wrx swap myself in my 2001 rs. IT will cost you WAY more then you think. So many parts you need besides just harness and engines. I've been searching for a comprehensive list for a very long time, with no luck. So I am just dropping it off at a shop to do the whole swap for me.

Engine alone for mine was 3600 shipped, 2004 with 4500 miles on it, plus x-member harness, ecu, complete engine basically. You need to upgrade so many parts. I'd say parts and labor and a new engine could get you up to 5-7 grand or so. Can always get a higher milage 2002ish wrx engine for way less, but I wanted a new engine, so I bought a NEW engine, heh.

Unless you are really good with wiring and wiring diagrams (you can't do it without them!) I would not go solo on that.

I just ordered my harness today for my EJ205 ... might as well do a parts break down asI havent yet. Keep in mind that I have been fairly lucky, and I started eairly march.. The waiting has killed me, and the stress of scouring NASIOC for parts...if you can, but a clip!! It will cost more, but way less stressful.

engine ~60k, ecu, engine harness, HKS up pipe, and Invida 3" DP = 1000
Leg turbo X member = $150
Stock WRX fuel pump = $25
Map sensor = $30
Stock intake = free
JDM V7 sti harness = $350
New oil pump, h20 pump, timing belt, intake manifold gaskets, thermostat, oil filters, F & R main seals= ~300
stock intercooler = $100
FMU = $85
STI cat back = $90
PS pump = $50
BOV = $25

Still need ps brackets & lines (think I will have a shop fab some up if I cant get them cheap. Stil need boost controller, need to fab radiator hoses, a bunch of wiring and tools for that. Procure a cherry picker. New fuel filter.. Will need to do a bunch of rewiring... Make a plug for FMU as Yamarocket did for his. It will be a headache, but I am a pretty cheap bastard.

I think that adds up to just over $2.2k. I figure prolly when I am said and done it will be $2.5k. Am hoping to sell my motor to recoup some of the cost. If you pay a shop to do it I dont think you could get out for less than $5k. Wiring will be a whole lotta hours.

this isn't a V7 motor, strange you're using the V7 harness though, but I guess you found it cheaper and will not being using AVCS

^^ Persactly. Also I can keep the AVCS wires, and if I ever later decide to throw on some V7 heads It will be no prob. Atleast thats the upside I am thinking. Believe me, I'd rather have an 02 WRX front and bulkhead harness.

i've got a couple grand wrapped up in my project so far. Always gotta plan on the nickel and dime stuff.. Which will usually run you about 50-100 bucks a pop when you go out and order stuff. So it adds up quick.

Upgrade your clutch, do the fuel pump to, its cheap and easy.

The wiring.. ugghhh. pain in the ass. You'll have DAYS wrapped up in that jungle. If your confident in wiring abilities, grab both wiring diagrams for the donor engine (car) and the car your swapping into.. And study study study study.

Kyle shoot me an IM or talk to me at an autocross about my swap and swap options. I know everything you'll need to know about doing a swap. I've done more swaps then I can count now.
