Default I cant decide on a Suspension (GC8): SPT/AGX vs. Tein Basic vs. Tanabe Sustec SO-C

I dont know guys, should I go for the simple coilover setups or just stick with the tride-and-true SPT/AGX combo???

I really liked the AGX/Ground Control combo on my last car, but It was rather hokey in design and I'd like to try something different. That was definatly my limit for a street-car type suspension in terms of ride, It was stiff and only occasionally teeth-smacking, and the adjustability of the AGX"s helped with that as well as setting up the handling for different situations (autox or my two track days) as well as changing up the settings as each little small mod changed how the car reacted.

As of right now, I just have RS struts springs with a WRX 20mm rear swaybar, and whiteline steering rack bushings and front and rear heavyduty endlinks, and an el-cheapo front strut bar. I also have STI transverse bushings on the way (the $80 ones that go in the same spot as the ALK does, I had them on my last car and enjoyed them alot) and some rear hub group-n bushings that have been sitting on my desk since before my last car went bye bye.

The one thing I HAVE decided on, is that I want Group-N tophats. Everyone loves them, and everyone recommends them. I dont care about adjustable camber, even though I occasionally auto-x or go to a track day (I'm not trying to compete with anyone, just go fast and have fun) but the way I drive my car every day is rather hard, at least when it comes to handling My last car didnt have group-n tophats, which I think I missed out on considering how well setup it was...

The other thing im pretty sure on, is that I want to buy new. Im tired of used crap, which is all I seem to end up with. BUT hey, if a deal shows up that works for what I want... who knows.

Anyway, there are things I enjoy, like the adjustability of height (I do occasionaly drive to the snow, so extra height is nice) and dampening for different situations. But price is a HUGE issue for me, and every $ that is spent on suspension means it wont go to tires or anything else... Which makes $2k coilovers (or even $1250) out of the question.

I've explored the GDA take-off STI options, and decided that was not what I was looking for (unless someone has a V5 or V6 takeoff suspension I dont know about). I also know I dont want low spring rate springs, nor do I care about lowering the car over an inch or so. I also dont want a bone-jarring, full-on-race-preped ride... I looked at all the stock spring rates out there for GC8's and I cant find much that are actually availible other than SPT's, or springs with way too low of spring rates (SPT's sound about right, some say too low but ill find out soon during a test ride I hope) and the only strut options are AGX's... Gr2's are nothing to wave a stick at, and V5/6's are super expensive new. The Tarmac spring/strut setup sounds nice, but SUPER stiff.

Thats why I started to look into coilovers though, due to the lack of options...

I know coilovers have rebuild issues, but putting 15k miles on a car takes me a LONG time to do (ive only put 1250 miles on this car since last september) so a rebuild might not be something i'd have to worry about anytime soon...

The only two setups ive seen in my budget are Tein Basics (~$900) which everyone seems to carry and the Tanabe Sustec SO-C Type 2's for 93-01's (~$999) which ive only seen sold by Gruppe-S...

I have only seen sporadic reviews of the Basics, and it seems mostly people buy them to lower their cars or because they used to be the only 02+ wagon option around (but the wagon ones had a rather soft setup, correct?). The reviews ive seen do seem to indicate a quality ride with a good combination of stiffness and ride quality. Of course, the downfall of these are the lack of dampening adjustability... But that might be a HUGE issue if they actually are a well-matched set of struts and springs. The lack of pillowballs isnt a huge issues though cause I want group-n's like I said to support them.

The Tanabes I have little to no info about. Ive heard about maybe someone having something like them, but im not sure. I cant even tell if they have adjustability in anything, or what they come with. Im trying to contact Gruppe-S now about it. Everyone does say Tanabe is a quality brand, but not something thats common with Subaru's. I have seen a couple reviews for the more expensive setups, and they compliment the ride and the handling. I have also heard they come with rear pillow balls, which I dont really want... If these are adjustable in height and dampening, then this would be my high end choice and probably as good if not better than my old suspension. I definatly need WAY more info about them though...

As for SPT's/AGX's, everyone has them, especially on RS25.com. Great combo, sold by subaru so its easy to get replacements, and the ride heigh is about exactly what I want and the adjustability I know already. The bad thing, is that its same-old-same-old... But right now, this is probably my #1 choice even though it doesnt include ride height adjustability. It would allow me to even persue a different set of wheels (call me crazy, but the love it or hate it attitude about my 98 golds is getting annoying) along with quality tires...

So basically, I'd like to know what people think about all this, if anyone even cares enough to respond after reading all this ranting Perhaps more opinions about my choices, or maybe something ive missed completely, or any comments at all would be helpfull...

I just installed mine and I love them. Just becuase they are the same ol' same ol' doesn't mean they don't perform.

lol i dont' think anyone wants to read that long post, I was researching about the Tanabe's as well and so far everyone i've asked likes them. ( I pm'd g0tb00st) My friend has Tein basics on his accord, he has his car slammed and he says it rides almost like stock, I think the spring rates are pretty soft on Tein basics for coilovers so they both should be good.

8k/6k i thought for the teins...

Too late though, ive ordered everything for the AGX's/SPT's

I finalized my decision after recalculated costs and figuring how much I wanted to save for tires and possible wheels.

I was going to say go for the STi tarmacs and koni's to avoid the rebuild costs. Coilovers subjected to snow/sand/salt don't tend to last long.

im running P1s and V5 struts and it is very firm but handles very well but you need a 20mm rsb or bigger because it understeers with out it so i have to buy a bigger one now
