Default My ej20g only fires on two slugs, Help me I'm going insane

Posted: Sun May 15, 2005 2:12 pm Post subject: engine only fires on two cylenders....Help

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well I got my ej20g conversion going, and thought all was great, it was running really rough, so I started to unplugging coils to see which cylinders were not firing, and 2 and 3 were not firing, I tried swapping the coils from the cyl I knew were working, but no difference, It's definitly 2 and 3 that are not firing. I hooked up a spare coil and spark is being created on both cyl so my next thought was injectors, so I unpluged both cyl 2 and 3, and again nothing. I took out the injector from 4 and put it into cly 2 and found out that now it won't run, so I've pretty much figures that injectors 2 and 3 are blocked, the engine sat for about 4 years. Does anyone know how I can check them, unclog them? Any sugestions form guys who have done swaps.
Thanks
Frazer

like said above.. check the timing, compression and if those 2 are correct or acceptable. then maybe fool around with some sort of induction cleaning crap.. But do those first 2, and let us know.

I think the timing is ok, as I just replaced the timing belt. I just put the injector from 1 into 3 and the injector from 2 into 4, and nothing, it would not fire, so I swaped them back and it fired. This is strange to me, because I would have thought I would have had 2 and 3 firing, it cauphed, but nothing. Swaped them back and it ran.so that leaves me to beleive it's the injectors, they look clean and I can hear them clicking, but nothing. I also noticed that when I pulled the plugs this mornign they were soaked, so it has leaked all night, I replaced the o rings around the base of the injecter and hopefully that will stop that. So what do you suggest??O I almost forgot, I got a code 22 knock sensor this time when it fired up, I havn't had this before now.

Thanks

Ok, Update, went and got a multimeter that beebs at me when it has good continuity and found out that my Map sensor was not grounded, or poorly grounded, so I bridged it to a ground wire and turned the key to find my battery is flat...urg. I'll update after it's been on the charger for a few days.

im sorry, seems like you haveing the worst luck ever.
yeah also check for voltage, and see what you are getting and diff. points(refer to the fac. manual on the voltage drop spec.). Also the injector might no be closing or getting stuck open, so see if anyone local has some sidefeeds you can borrow(i think stock DSM injectors are side feeds and are 440's).

good luck.

<-Put an EJ20G into a GC, and trust me that thing will make you grin every time you beat an STi or an EVO . Also what i have noticed, is dont let the car go over 1bar of boost, if you can keep the boost at 14.0 that will be the best. My friends car would start hitting fuel cut on anything over a bar.(this is the stock ECU and everything else all stock, on a ej20g)

Thanks Jaxx,
Here's the update, This weekend I replace the jdm grey injectors for 92 Legacy usdm turbo pinks. I also replaced the fuel regulator to make sure I wasn't missing anything. I then got the scans for a 92 legacy from the guys in RSLIBERTYCLUB.org from here http://www.driftquebec.com/legacy/. With the scans I made sure I had wired everything correctly, and voila I found I had swapped d8 and d11, so I switched them back and tried to fire it up. Well it cought on one cylinder #4 and would not catch on any others. I hate myself right now, this year long project is just not running, I'm going to replace the ignition relay because i've heard they can play up. I'm also going to get my injectors that came with the engine checkout and flow tested so I can then put them back in.

Any suggestions from you guys, I'm about ready to throw a match on this sucker, please help.
Thanks
Frazer

my plug were soaked when I pulled them out after about 30 seconds of cranking it over. I'm thinking it may be getting too much fuel.

Update 29May 05

I got the injectors cleaned and flow tested,(they were all good), I put new o rings on them, I put new coil packs, spark plugs and a new ignition relay, Cam Angle sensor
Turned the key and it fired up.....on two cylinders, I know I'm getting spark and fuel, what the hell is wrong.
How do I check with a multimieter the cyl that are not firing to see if their getting pulses for both coils and injectors. maybe that is where my problem lies.

I dont know if you have or not. You might try: Pulling the coils off one by one and put a new plug in the coil and hold it to Engine Ground while cranking. You should be able to see spark. Be sure to leave your plugs in the engine while you do this.

If all your plugs are wet, your injectors are probobly working. Properly is a different story.

Worth a Try

Default Plugs

Good call on the plugs, I've checked for spark but have pulled the plug's each time and disconnected the fuel pump, I've got the spark, but not checked for fuel with this method. I'll give it a shot.

I'm 99.99% sure I did, I"m only doubting myself because the thing won't start. But all the marks lined up perfectly and everything was still lined up when I turned it over a few times after. I guess I can recheck.
