i finally came with a set plan for a swap to replace my broken stock motor. i am going with the JDM v.7 block with the USDM stock head(AVCS). i will be using the version 8 JDM ECU and a tune by prodrive. along with this setup i will be running sti pink injectors and a vf34 with a 255walbro fuel pump. is this a pretty good setup?

you need a USDM ecu to go with those heads. Either that or get jdm v7/v8 heads to go with that ecu. Sounds good otherwise

I don't get it, why all the mixing and matching. If you're going the JDM route, why don't you just get a full JDM engine? Those heads are better. |

the mixing and matching is kinda of a long story...basically i can get the USDM STI heads cheaper than the v7/v8 heads. i am getting the v7 block for roughly 1100.00. but steve at aerosim says i am fine with using the sti USDM heads on the v7 while using the JDM ECU. the JDM ECU already has wiring for the ACVS. i'll try my luck with steve's advise since he does this stuff for a living and has history of great swaps.
petawabit thanks for assuring that this is a good setup. Last edited by swift2fly; 05-15-2005 at 11:13 AM. |

np man. the usdm sti heads do work with the jdm ecu if you use the intake manifold not meant for the us sti that has the throttle body attached to it. my mistake.
or you can just use your stock ecu and get ia performance's avcs wiring kit. might save some trouble and some money as I think they're 150. |

thats not correct, the JDM heads will NOT work properly with the USDM ecu even if you have the intake manifold with DBW. The cam position sensors are different (sensors and the cams themselves, which they trigger off of)
Steve at Aerosim is incorrect in that respect. I'd recommend just using the jdm ecu/harness/full engine if you're going to do it that way, much easier then going usdm with the dbw and extra emissions control devices. |

well..looks like my options have changed. after a few searches for the jdm v7, steve could not land one. so as i need my car back from an engine failure incident with the USDM EJ20, he found me a new USDM EJ25 block to swap in..so with the USDM heads..it now shouldn't be an issue. thanks for the replies guys, it's great when you learn something new.

its a difference of cam senor setups, (avcs does not have to work for a car to run)
the JDM head needs a JDM ecu to work... it can work with a USDM WRX.. the USDM sti head is totally different it needs a USDM STI ecu(forester ecu might work too?) not only is that an issue, but what compression ratio would that make?? the USDM 2.5 with wrx/jdm heads is a high compression ratio... so i guess with what u plan it would be very low |

So, there you go ... it will work. And it's a hell of a lot easier than a jdm ecu/harness/full engine. Lots cheaper too. -Steve Stephen.Ramm@aerosim-research.com |
