go to www.tomshardware.com for reviews and the CPU chart.

I would suggest a AMD 64 but not the FX55. Overpriced right now. (800$). Get a socket 939 mobo and later on when the prices drop upgrade the cpu to an FX or a dual core(which doesnt give more performance unless you run multiple applications at the same time).
Also, 400$ could go for the video card alone.
DDR2, well dont know if the mobos are out for amd and ddr2.

I just got an AMD 64 3200+, 1GB Corsair TwinMatched Cas2, MSI Nforce3 mobo for 420$.
Using my old 9700 pro it rocks. Im going to wait for the Radeon XT and AMD FX to drop price (prob 2 years from now)

Go for a Venice core'd socket 939 A64, Dual layer DVD burner, Audigy 2ZS sound (or some other hardware based card, onboard STILL isnt as good) a DFI lanparty MB, You will most definately want a Raptor for the main system HD, and you will be going PCI express for video, and I would go X850XT over the 6800ultra any day of the week.

You dont need 2 gigs of ram, there are benchmarks showing LESS frames per second with 2 gigs over 1 gig (this was in halflife2) so I would go for some nice cas2 PC4000 ram for overclocking headroom

For cooling I would go with a Zalman "flower" type cpu cooler, and for a power supply I would use the OCZ modstream or powerstream.

I have built like 40 machines. 15-20 of which were for myself. I used to do major upgrades every 3-4 months.

This is the pile of parts from the buildup of my current machine

If you really want to hit the 2500 limit, shove a pair of 6800Ultras in SLI. Complete overkill and expensive as hell, but that would fly....

Also the FX chips are overpriced fanboi items, like the Intel EE cpus. Yes they are the fastest but are waaaaay expensive for what you get. 3800+ Venice core is the way to go.

$25 for a book? Hell you can easily find every parts review on the internet.

Daves system spec sounds great. I'm running ATI cards in both my machines now but I'd almost feel better taking the 6800 Ultra over X850.

Back to some of your original requirements, I would avoid a Single HDD and Single DVD at all costs. Go with a dual drive config for both. Having a 10k Raptor drive for Windows and your important apps, and then having another huge drive for storage is a much better choice. You can get away with a single DVD drive but 2 never hurt, and for the extra $50 theres not much of a reason not to.

Also make sure that your speakers/monitor(s) and such are still up to par. For that price you could throw in a very nice dual monitor setup as well.
