Foglight question
I'm thinking of upgrading my foglights so I can actually throw some light rather then the near useless light output currently displayed...I am confused as what to do- I can either replace the current bulbs with a PIAA set or just replace the whole unit with aftermarket foglights. Since the bulbs aren't exactly cheap, I wouldnt want to replace them just to find out that they only marginally increase the light thrown.. advice?

replacing the bulbs wont do much. it will be the same beam pattern but slightly brighter. if your looking to put light down the road then you might want to upgrade to the prodrive/hella light kit for the fogs. they are hella ff1000 driving lights and they come with brackets to mount them in our factory fog locations, they fit behind mesh fog light covers and they are bright! like only to be used with high beams bright. i put them in when i put in hid kit because with the hids i no longer have high beams. these were a great solution. www.rallylights.com is where i got mine from. total shipped was like $165 for everything, lights brackets, wire and relays. i went on a trip to the junk yard and ganked 2 oe fog light connectory off of a crashed ts and spliced the new fogs to that instead of cutting into the factory harness.

In addition to what seth_man said about bulb upgrade's marginal effect in general, you might want to decide what kind of beam pattern is "not useless" for you.
The OEM reflector fog units with the MY2002-2003 GD/GGs actually do a reasonable job as what it is designed for; fog lights. Fwiw, compared to the non-RS foglights of the first generation GC/GF/GM models, those in the my2002-2003 are better. However, there are aftermarket foglights that throw a relatively wider beam pattern and produce a sharper vertical cutoff than the OEM reflectors. An example would be the Hella Optilux projector fogs (e.g. 1000 series, 1100, 1080, ...). Given the same H3 55W bulbs, the beam pattern is quite superior. If lighting up the sides of the road & foul weather lighting is not what you need, then you probably need those with driving light pattern, or the tighter spot beam pattern. Those would do a good job complementing or supplementing the high beams, but could potentially blind oncoming traffic if used like the low beams. If you haven't already, be sure to visit this thread: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=673117 You may find some configuration that suits your purpose. |

Piaa
If you are still intrested in PIAA, The PIAA web site has useful info on light patterns for the lamps they offer. I have PIAA H4 plasma bulbs for my headlights that are awesome and are looking at upgrading my lamps also. The H4 bulbs work good enough for driving though I prefer to go with the wider 'fog' beam for my lamps on my 01 RS. The H4 Headlights crank out 110watts. Cheaper alternative for the pencil beam effect without upgrading the lamps if you are on a budget, about 90 bucks.

Just remember, if you're going to use bulbs over 55w, you'll need to run a new wiring. [just to be safe]
Hella 500s and FF1000's in driving beam patterns are the two most cost effective lamps for throwing light further down the road. Heck, even with "only" 55w bulbs, they're brighter than your OEM high beams. |
