I noticed my car won't allow me to switch into first when I'm going really slow. It has to be pretty much at a dead stop before it will allow me to. Is this common with all subaru's or what?
Also, my second gear sounds a little funny. Doesn't do it all the time. Just when it feels like it. It makes more of a high pitched noise. Hard to explain. Definately not quite like the rest. Assistance please! thanks Justin

im seems like subarus werent made to go into first when rolling. the high pitch noise just might be in ur head. turn up the music... |

first gear is always a bitch.
Either double clutch to first or don't put it in 1st unless your in a dead stop. |

Usually I put it in 2nd and engine brake, then clutch in and 1st is pretty easy to get into.

1st gear is more of a bitch to get into than any other gear- but as long as you rev match it should be fine. I had a friend on an autox course drive my car and he was on the top of first and second- shifted 9 times around the 30 second course! So- if he can do it, I can learn to do it. I've been practicing for a while because i know its been tough to get into- just not autox course ready to be shiftin like that.
Cliff Notes: It can be done with rev matching with enough practice. |

it's because 1st gear isn't synchronized, just like reverse. You'll end up breaking your 1st gear if you keep trying to slam it into 1st from a roll.

1st gear does have a synchronizer.

Here's a tip, if you are rolling and need to go into first, give the car a little bit of gas, everything lines up better and the gear slides right in.

Holding it in place is just waiting for the synchro. That causes wear on the synchro. It's better to rev match, as he describes.

do what he said...I can double clutch into 1st going 10mph (not that I would do it all the time)
